Genre fiction. Dead serious.

How do you approach a text in foreign language? What level are you?

I like to read the text several times, each time I try to get deeper into it, in terms of vocabulary, grammar and sense

Don't read a book unless you have already acquired a mild command of the target language's grammar, as well as a decent vocabulary. Combine Anki with a regular textbook and eventually a vocabulary builder to do so. Once you're done, as the other user said, never go through a classic but instead an easier genre, like science-fiction, or romance, or a soft noir/thriller book. Emphasize on a simple, entertaining plot, shallow characters you can quickly sympathize with and a fluid, short prose. Avoid longer sentences and look for many dialogues.

I speak French fluently and can read most works without much difficulty. sure I will need a dictionary for some of the more obscure words but everything more or less fits.

I also speak Spanish, but not as competently. I tried reading A Hundred Years of Solitude in the original Spanish and was lost without a dictionary. The train of thought was hard to follow too.

So I read Spanish genre fiction. Mainly the kind of books you'd find in WHSmith at the airport. Just simple, entertaining books; if it's too dense in terms of themes or symbolism I get distracted from the prose and the language.

Genre fiction is great for learning as the prose is manageable and I can infer the meaning of unknown words by understanding the context and a bit of guesswork. It's more fun than picking through a dictionary or a grammar book.
