Cyberpunk edition

What's your favorite Cyberpunk book/story? Is anyone still writing it? Why has every other subgenre tacked "punk" on the end of its name?

I swear to God, if anyone says Snow Crash...
>>
>>8092094
WHY YOU DON'T LIKE THE 'ZA?

Can anyone remind me of that one novel that was about a murder mystery in the singularity age? Altered Carbon?
>>
>>8092094
But it is. I really unironically enjoyed Snow Crash when I was unironically 16, which is the proper age to enjoy a literature based on the paranoia that Reagan, Thatcher, and Sony were going to turn the world into a slum. Snow Crash is an absolutely perfect example of cyberpunk: the permanight that justifies black leather all the time, the grey morality that allows characters to unleash mayhem without guilt, and the extrapolation of late 20th-century themes ad absurdum. Snow Crash wasn't too dumb to really be cyberpunk; the other works were too smart.
>>

Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom was like that.
>>

I'll have to check that out (future Disney/theme parks are my favorite) though I'm thinking it was a little older.

Has anyone read Accelerando? I got it for $1 at a used book store.

Anything that combines science fiction and horror in an interesting way? I've burnt myself out on religious/mythology horror like demonic possession, witches, and too many shitty ghost stories to count.

There's always Lovecraft
>>
>>8092386
GRRM does this in a lot of his short stories.
>>
>>8092392

I've went through most/all of Lovecraft's stuff, even the Reanimator shorts which really wasn't as bad as people make it out to be.

But I'd definitely be down for more Lovecraftian work, I just never paid attention to who continued the mythos.
>>

Read Sandkings by GRRM. It's short, well written and absolutely bone chilling. That last line stuck with me for months.

Should I read Stormlight Archive or the second Mistborn trilogy first or does it not matter?
>>
>>8092598
Eschew both and read Lud-In-The-Mist.
>>

Two separate planets, doesn't really matter. Although the whole universe is supposed to come together in some book that will come out in like 2030.

>>

>>8092605
yeah that's sort of what I heard, wasn't sure if they would be connected in some small way
>>
>>8092598

Read Stormlight then Mistborn 1 then 2

Beware of the feminist bullshit in all of those books
>>
>>8092616
I already read the first Mistborn trio
I'm not sure having female characters is "feminist bullshit"
>>
>>8092621

It's not about having female characters it's that the female characters are all feminist bullshti ideology filled bullshit I don't know why the author is trying to brainwash everyone with the ideology agenda feminism but he is
But I suggest Stormlight Archives before reading the 2nd mistborn era
>>
>>8092623

Sanderson is a gay hating Mormon, not exactly a feminist.
>>
>>8092623
The first books have nothing of the sort. No "gurl power" bullshit, no evil strawmen being sexist to her, no incompetent male characters, lots of generic hetero romance.
>>
>>8092628

The second era definitely has poisoning I did finish the first book but never progressed further than that, I could just feel my brain telling me I'm being poisoned and brainwashed by agenda ideology I think it's feminism
>>
>>8092636

You're being "poisoned" by the idea that men and women are equal?
>>
>>8092639

No I'm being poisoned and brainwashed by an ideology agenda it's fucking clear as day how are you blind to it or are you too far gone already
>>
>>8092640

It's inevitable for a writer to incorporate his ideas and beliefs into his work. If you were reading John C Wright you would still be poisoned and brainwashed, to put it in your terms, just by /pol/ ideology and agenda instead of sjw.

You're safe from both and can enjoy both authors as long as you think with your head.
>>
>>8092636
Sanderson doesn't rite his female characters for some feminist agenda, it's just he only knows how to write one very shallow female character who just happens to dovetail with a lot of feminist horseshit.
>>
>>8092651

The entire world of Mistborn is a metaphor about Germany just like Elantris is a metaphor about Israel
It's fucking clear as day he points it out almost every chapter in some ways some clearer than others
>>
>>8092662

You could easily solve this problem by not reading Sanderson in the first place and reading some good sff like Peake or Wolfe instead.
>>
>>8092678
I don't think good means boring anon.
>>
>>8092683

It's only boring to you because you're probably an ADHD riddled millennial incapable of processing a novel that doesn't have anime swordfights and ebin explosions.
>>

I couldn't make it through one of Peake's books even with ADHD medications, they are boring as fuck

>>
>>8092781
Prose was often complete nonsense.
Plot is generic 80s action movie.
Characters are bland.
The cyberpunk aesthetic is done better in Ghost in the Shell and Deus Ex making this ran over by time.
Everything in cyberpunk in novels isn't something I'd write home about.

No self-respecting writer should refer to the Abrahamic God as "god" without a capital G. IIRC most mainstream dictionaries spell the word with a G.
>>
>>8092616
What? All characters are people of their world. You don't expect women on Roshar with all its brutality and stone and storms and giant flipping crabs to be like women on earth and adhere to feminism bullshit ideology, or Vin in Scadrial with all its depressive society and atmosphere and with all her mistborn powers to be some shitty woman just because autists like you don't like feminism.

I honestly like Stormlight Archive. It's my favorite ongoing fantasy series and all female characters are believable and genuinely motivated. I don't know why would you say stupid stuff like that, anon. Go check yourself.

Why does fantasy specifically seem to attract so many SJ- err... neoprogressive types?

It's all got to be about non-european culture or female protagonists or anything that caters to an agenda nowadays. Are they as prevalent in, let's say, Sci-Fi and I simply fail to notice them because I don't get as involved in the genre as I do with fantasy? Does fantasy really have something that attracts this kind of people? Is it just an uncanny coincidence?

>>
>>8093273
>Why? They share a lot of beliefs, don't they?

Not really. It's an interesting time for American politics. /pol/ and other groups like it is more Libertarian leaning compared to the heavily Authoritarian Neocons and Liberals. 30 years ago /pol/ would have been considered Center left. The entire political spectrum has shifted heavily leftward in the last decade which has caused a lot of strange bedfellows. Think less of Left-Right and more Up-Down. Libertarian vs Authoritarian.
>>
>>8093290

I don't think Americans even understand what the Left really is.

I think Cold War paranoia eradicated in the bud whatever could have grown to become "the Left" so all that remains is a two party system that to the outsider (at least, to me here in Europe) looks like "right wing" versus "slightly less right wing that we for some odd reason call left"

I mean, I don't see any Democrats advocating the abolition of private property or the dictatorship of the proletariat. It's all right wing as far as the eye can see.
>>
>>8093313
America has plenty of Leftism. Being an insane Communist isn't a prerequisite for that.

>>
>>8093273
Oh, sorry, I assumed bad faith.

>>8093290 isn't IMO totally correct. /pol/ used to be libertarians but are more authoritarian right nowadays. There's a big difference between the right of /pol/ and the right of George W. Bush-style neocons, mainly in how they want to handle immigration and foreign intervention. Neocons assume democracy is best for everyone and work to make sure everyone has it; alt-righters don't agree that democracy is good for anyone and work to make sure everyone minds their own business.

John C. Wright isn't either, he's a constitutional conservative mostly. He's not a libertarian as such but believes we should move towards libertarianism, but he also believes that government should promote public morality, mostly in the sense of letting city governments put up Nativities if they want to. Actually he just put up a blog post defining his principles http://www.scifiwright.com/2016/05/whats-in-a-name/

And he doesn't hate gays, he just believes gay sex is a sin and they'd be better off celibate, and he doesn't hate women, in fact he loves them a little too much, he just believes in traditional gender roles and hates the kung-fu princess stereotype.
>>

That's a good enough understanding. And well the problem is most people are stupid as shit so they can't run stuff well. Lenin put workers in control of factories in the Russian revolution and the industrial output plummeted. But power corrupts so people in charge usually look out for themselves.

>>
>>8093376

>Though is it even possible for left to lose, considering that's most people?

They lose most of the time because while ideal in theory it doesn't work in practice because of human nature, humans are ambitious and greedy and will always try to better themselves/their position even at the expense of others, amass wealth and status etc so when you try to keep them forcibly equalized it always backfires horribly.

>Like in Venezuela?

Venezuela is a classic "socialist dictatorship" (or in other words, military dictator using socialist ideology to get support) bundled with the added bonus of being a petrostate. Put everything into social programs without saving anything, nationalize everything and then give it to your cronies who don't know how to run anything, seize everything owned by foreign companies, but whoops looks like oil prices have gone down and you've got no savings, the social programs are on fire and nobody wants to invest in your country for some strange reason. Better blame America and Zionists I guess? Maybe phone up Mugabe or Putin for some tips on dealing with people rioting because their kids are dying and a gallon of milk costs half a month's salary?

You have a very stereotypical view of /pol/

As far as I understand, /pol/ doesn't hate gays or women, it is just disgusted by how they are worshiped and celebrated, as if homosexuality is a positive thing, and taking women out of their natural habitat is a good thing, while anyone who has ever worked with women can tell you how useless they are and even destructive to the work environment.

>>
>>8093533
Just read it.
Pretty much all those negative reviews can be summed up with "I don't get it", "it wasn't what I epxected" "nihilism/bleak/sollipsism".
Some people think a book having a bleak and nihilistic tone is bad but they just want some normal fantasy with the usual tropes.

Fact is, Iron Dragon's Daughter deviates very clearly from standard fantasy. It doesn't use the usual trope. It's different.
It's a good novel, but if you want the usual tropes you should just stick to Sanderson.

They do hate blacks though. Even when blacks were slaves they were despised, this makes me think there is credence to the claim that blacks were in power at sometime in the past(Timbuktu, etc) and whites hate that. They destroyed all traces of them when found(Napoleon shooting the nose off the sphinx), and this isn't hard if you look at the Catholic church, they then used propaganda money to say that whites did it... when whites weren't even in the region.

I don't know, read a fantasy book where someone did just that. They formed a church, burned/hide all references to the past, then enacted harsh penalties for anyone talking about it. Fast foreword a few centuries and everyone believes the lies, and would gleefully watch you get strung up if you were being contrarian.

The person was able to get away with this because he was immortal (or close enough), and his hands were on the tiller for the whole ride. But i guess humans can this too if you have a strong sense of "one-with-your-kind" and would do anything to see your people flourish.

They say all folklore/fantasy is taken from real life. Did blacks really rule an empire/empires?
Did whites get jelly and do something about it?
I know whites stole a lot of inventions from the blacks and called it their own, i know they did the same to chinese. Are whites just thieves?
They are trying/succeeded in stealing the sandhugger's oil.
They succeeded in stealing the Native's land.

The book you're talking about was Mistborn, wasn't it?

And the hating blacks thing is a consequence of their actions, whether caused by culture, society, genetics, or just their position, it is caused by them.

I don't know about blacks being in power, well, they must have been, since there were mostly blacks in Africa during the time when the slave trade in the states started, but how much power is debatable and I have no knowledge of it.

>But i guess humans can this too if you have a strong sense of "one-with-your-kind" and would do anything to see your people flourish.

That's called tribalism, or tribe mentality, it exists in almost every human being.

And folklore is akin to religion, it is superstition started by something someone couldn't explain a shit long time ago and it became common to celebrate it or whatever.

And please, whites barely stole any inventions from blacks, most of the inventions of the modern era came from Europe and later, the states. China and some other Asian nations were very advanced, many times they couldn't apply their knowledge, like with gunpowder, Arabs were very good at mathematics, so must have been ancient Egyptians, the two obviously must have intertwined somewhen or where, but again, Europeans were the ones to apply that knowledge.

A lot of people who criticize Tolkien for that don't understand that it's defined exactly on the way as it is on some interpretations of Christianity. Good = God's will, what the world is supposed to be. Evil = the Devil's meddling. The first Dark Lord of Middle-Earth was Melkor, the most powerful of the Valar who decided to introduce some of his own ideas into the Music of the Ainur besides the picture they were shown by Eru Ilúvatar. It's not even subtle. And despite it being a corruption, it's also made clear that evil is only allowed to exist so that it will serve as contrast or inspiration to good.

>Then Ilúvatar spoke, and he said: 'Mighty are the Ainur, and mightiest among them is Melkor; but that he may know, and all the Ainur, that I am Ilúvatar, those things that ye have sung, I will show them forth, that ye may see what ye have done. And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined.'

>And Ilúvatar spoke to Ulmo, and said: 'Seest thou not how here in this little realm in the Deeps of Time Melkor hath made war upon thy province? He hath bethought him of bitter cold immoderate, and yet hath not destroyed the beauty of thy fountains, nor of my clear pools. Behold the snow, and the cunning work of frost! Melkor hath devised heats and fire without restraint, and hath not dried up thy desire nor utterly quelled the music of the sea. Behold rather the height and glory of the clouds, and the everchanging mists; and listen to the fall of rain upon the Earth! And in these clouds thou art drawn nearer to Manwë, thy friend, whom thou lovest.'

Fugg man, I don't know so I'm with you on wanting recommendations, but I'd like to write one where the main character is a necromancer and demon worshipper, newborn-sacrificing and all. Like how I wish you could've chosen to actually join the followers of Dagon in Oblivion.

How about describing what they're actually doing on the computer rather than what they're physically doing? People really should stick to writing what they know.

Are you the new avatar fag? I think cosmerefag is one too many for our general.

Mieville's Bas-Lag trilogy, especially The Scar. You've got spider-creatures who see higher dimensions, swamp people who sculpt shit out of water, giant moths that hynotise you and consume your mind, Garuda (which I found out recently are an actual mythological thing), Golems, warlike cactus-men, all sorts.

No, I'm just posting pictures. I've posted plenty of times without doing so.

Jonathan Cabal Necromancer??
Maybe Abhorsen Trilogy?

Yeah I'm already aware of that one, it feels like Mieville is the only thing that gets recommended on those kind of questions.

I'm just posting how the movies/tv series all do it. If it's technical mumbo jumbo people will not watch. So they have to make it look cool.

If they talk about injecting code into the ram cnip to gain access to the buffer people will run, only nerds like you will stick. And before anything writers are out for a paycheck, so they will appeal to the lowest common denominator, i.e the plebs.

Yo I posted Cabal first, how the fuck did you appear above me?

I would recommend reading science fiction instead. You've got a ton of choices then like say The Voyage of the Space Beagle.

No you didn't, he posted a minute before you.
