So James Joyce wrote a better coming of age book set in the 2000's than John Green did? Doubt it.
>>
>>8004360
>but still providing the realities of life's problems at that age
He's not though.

John Green hasn't been a teenager in forever, and it's super obvious. His characters don't act like teenagers, more like stereotypes of them, not to mention the fact that in most of his books they're more like "lolsoquirkyxd" fanfic characters than actual people. seriously, read some dialogue from his books. nobody fucking talks like that.
>>
>>8004390

I've read a few of his books, and I thought that the young genius character who has only dated girls named Katherine was totally relateable.

Don't you know that if one other person likes a book, it becomes shit.

Popularity equals shit, because reasons

U know who else was popular? Stalin

You know that author you know about that's bad? Hes popular

The way to find the best books is to aggressively hunt them down at yard sales, that way you know nobody has read them

Just like my virgin hentai waifu, as soon as someone knows a book before me, it's useless.

>"The thing Alaska did next scared and shocked and surprised me in a way nothing had ever ever scared or shocked or surprised me until that moment, a moment which lasted no longer than one sharp intake of breath but one I have no doubt will last my entire life. She said 'I love you'. Not 'You're cool' or 'I had a really fun time' or 'Do you always kiss like that?' I love you. As in 'I, Alaska Young, love you, Miles Halter'. As in 'I Alaska Young have not only noticed that you Miles Halter exist but I positively adore the fact that you do'. I exhaled. Alaska did too and for the first time I realized she was as scared as I was of admitting the way she felt. I stepped forward and held her hips. 'Are you sure?' I asked. 'I think so!' she replied, smiling. I must have pushed her backwards because just then her body nudged the lightswitch and the room became as dark as my life was without Alaska in it. Laughing, she slipped out of my grasp and disappeared somewhere inside the room. I reached out like a blind man searching for the object that might grant him sight. Truly, I was Looking for Alaska."

John's kind of escapism is so blatantly obsessive and self serving that it is ridiculous. Every story is about a quirky misunderstood and pop-culture referential protagonist with a funky name reaching some kind of social, romantic, or sexual awakening because some equal quirky individual(s) penetrate their shyness and sweep them off their feet.

You can't tell me that this isn't a middle aged man fantasizing about the high school life he wished he had.

>good for young adult
It doesn't mean much to be "good" in a genre that exists solely to appease undeveloped and handicapped thinkers. Young Adult is essentially equivalent to just slapping "for retards" on the cover of a novel: there is no dignity in reading this shit unless you are young and trying to work on basic literacy.
>>
>>8007948
I'd like to add to this; you say that these books are useful for those who are still developing basic literacy, but I honestly can't see how someone who is able to read and understand Green's shit with some degree of ease would have any real trouble with the majority of "classic" literature out there. I think YA is more of an issue in the sense that it promotes a style of reading that is just as sophisticated and challenging as watching a chick flick, except the readings will absolutely never come to terms with that realization because they are still nonetheless reading and therefore have the inherent impression that they are doing something smart. We live in a society where people read so seldomly, they get praised for reading literally anything that resembles a book.

Pic related, it's obvious he likes John Darnielle because JD does so many of the same things Green does, (write about quirky, troubled teens) only in a much more artful way.

I honestly doubt Green has listened to anything besides The Sunset Tree, and MAYBE some of the edgier songs off Tallahassee

Try not to spend too many sentences on one thing/saying the same thing and you'll be fine. Also, unless you're writing erotica, try to separate your highschool fantasies and your novels to the best of your ability.

Basically, if it looks like something that would make their reader say something along the lines of "oh my goodd that's so mee!!", rewrite it.

eh, maybe it isn't as bad as I remember. it's endearing...whatever ill post it, rip me to shreds senpai:

The Eight Pillars of Happiness

The Pillars of Happiness

Not unlike the familiar pillars
Placed among the school,
Stands Five other structures
Comprised of a different pool.
Where the former discusses character
And all that that entails,
The latter is a lesser known
But likewise never fails.
Although each pillar is important
And thoroughly enjoyed,
Some are more than others,
Yet none should one avoid.
They've no concern for status
Or monetary gain.
Of power, none tell,
Save for the evils it can pain.
Of course, if used responsibly
Few things are of no use,
Yet even these do not the pillars condone,
For their very possible abuse.
For the pillars are of Family and Friend,
Of God and Romantic Love, too.
Yet the fifth pillar, oft-forgotten,
Is the Nature all around you.

>'It's long,' said the Knight, 'but very, VERY beautiful. Everybody that hears me sing it—either it brings the TEARS into their eyes, or else—'
>'Or else what?' said Alice, for the Knight had made a sudden pause.
>'Or else it doesn't, you know. The name of the song is called "HADDOCKS' EYES."'
>'Oh, that's the name of the song, is it?' Alice said, trying to feel interested.
>'No, you don't understand,' the Knight said, looking a little vexed. 'That's what the name is CALLED. The name really IS "THE AGED AGED MAN."'
>'Then I ought to have said "That's what the SONG is called"?' Alice corrected herself.
>'No, you oughtn't: that's quite another thing! The SONG is called "WAYS AND MEANS": but that's only what it's CALLED, you know!'
>'Well, what IS the song, then?' said Alice, who was by this time completely bewildered.
>'I was coming to that,' the Knight said. 'The song really IS "A-SITTING ON A GATE": and the tune's my own invention.'

Hank isn't that bad a guy. He is a simple nerd who continues to be one. His annoying affectations are forgivable because he's really just some lame guy.

John is a much more dangerous upstart. He is self-righteous and stupid with too much influence for his own good.

He's the worst kind of "nerd", the type that self-identify as such and who wear tshirts with "Nerd" across the tshirt as if they're so happy to embody what is essentially a character-type invented by mainstream media to split human beings into demographics based not on race or some objectively measurable thing but on cultural subgroups whose Platonic form is represented in movies and tv shows. It's disgusting. An aspergic Nazi engineer who works in complete isolation and is obsessed with creating a complex machine to kill jews etc is more of a "nerd" than a guy who talks in a falsely expressive voice on youtube about how neat Star Wars is. It's exactly the same as the word "Punk", which pretty much refers to anybody who is willing to be independent despite drawing the negative attention of other people and "the norm". Now it's all about wearing spiked jackets and living in a squat with a bunch of HIV sufferers. Both Nerd and Punk should be mentalities, not physical descriptors or means of self-definition. He's a nu-male beta cuck using the "Nerd" image to trick impressionable girls into overlooking his obvious character flaws because he's supposedly some super-clever, socially oppressed guy who deserves their pity and affection. It's disgraceful. I'm more of a nerd for typing out this long-ass reply on an anonymous shitposting blog than some dude is for wearing pixel sunglasses and a tshirt that says "GOT RAM?"

>Cock is one of my favorite tastes. Not only that, but balls smell amazing. It makes me go a little crazy on it to be honest. Like, I cannot get it far enough down my throat to be satisfied. I’m only satisfied when I feel those intense, powerful, salty, hot pumps of cum down my throat. When I sit back on my heels, look up at you with cum all over my mouth and slobber running down my neck, hair all fucked up and wipe my mouth with the back of my arm and ask you if I did a good job and you cannot even speak because I’ve drained all of your energy out the tip of your dick….. That’s when I’m satisfied.

John Green is actually easy to read. I don't understand where you get the idea that anyone who is able to read John Green is also able to read the majority of classical literature.

It was the last year of highschool, and my mother told me something that I just couldn't ignore. She didn't say "I love you", or "have a fun time at school", or any of that typical mom stuff that moms like my mom usually say. No, she said to me, John Michael Green, born in Indiana in 1977, future author of books such as The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska, brown hair, hazel eyes, around the age of 18 but going on 19, the following words, clearly, without pausing for breath and without an error in inflection: "John, what do you want to be when you grow up?"

"WHAAT?" I said, with an extra capital 'A' for emphasis. My mother seemed unperturbed by my immature use of capitalization and continued.

"I mean, what do you want to do?" she said. "Are you just going to sit in here and do nothing your entire life?"

I didn't know whether or not to be insulted. Stumbling on words, I said: "I-I wanna be a writer!"

"You need actual life experience to be a writer, John. What are you going to write about, anyway? Are you just going to write stories about fictional girlfriends you don't have?"

And that's what I did.
