This is the best overview of everything Tibetan from a scholarly viewpoint: the religion, history, language, culture, etc. It's not based on what the Dalai Lama thinks like in The Story of Tibet.
It shows both sides of the current conflict with the Chinese. Most other books are biased for either side.
