Daniel Steel is worth 550+ million, she writes cringe romance novels. She has around 100 novels published.

She isn't cringe herself but her buyers are.

Her book is very simple, as if an 8th grader wrote it. She is the Twlight of the romance world.

>Why do you care about these facts, OP?

Great question.

I care because I'm doing market research. As a Kindle Publisher, I need to understand markets. Books don't sell if there is no market for it.

Secondly, it's very interesting peeping into the lives of other people. What makes them read, say, Game of Throne rather than a history or science book? Why are adults compelled to read children YA (Adults reading Harry Potter etc)

Also, having a understanding of the pleb taste is very profitable. After the release of "50 shades of grey", many Indie kindle publishers wrote spin offs like "Taken by a Billionare" or "The Billionaire Party" and they made $100k+ USD etc.

Oh, and I like cringe stuff to laugh at.
>>
>>7970774
On the other hand, the two bestselling books of all time are Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, which isn't honestly a pretty good outcome given its peers (Fifty Shades, Harry Potter).
>>
>>7970774
>>50 percent of people will never read a book after they finish school
I only read one book DURING my school days, and I feel extremely blessed by this fact because retard failure-in-life English teachers didn't get to ruin the experience of reading literature for me.
I've seen them ruin it for many of my classmates though. (Of course I wasn't asleep 100% of the time.)
>>
This author is a Kindle Publishing multi-millionaire. Notice the title: "shades of vampire".

You don't have to be clever to make money off publishing books - just understand pleb taste.

Women liked vampires and 50 shades of grey ... so you just combine them and voila! Shades of Vampire.

Again, kudos to the author. There is nothing cringe about making millions. But her fan base is cringe as fuck, they're like bronies.

>On the other hand, the two bestselling books of all time are Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, which isn't honestly a pretty good outcome given its peers (Fifty Shades, Harry Potter).

Yeah but The Hobbit and LOTR was published LONG before Harry Potter and 50 shades of grey, so you have to take that into account.
>>

I know, and they both outsold Tolkien as a series. It's a ray of pretty good in a sky of endless shit.

>Why are adults compelled to read children YA (Adults reading Harry Potter etc)
>children YA
Children's fiction and YA are both separate genres, in case you didn't know. Young Adult novels are aimed at young adults. There are a lot of reasons why someone would read Harry Potter - to understand the monumental cultural significance of it, to bask in feelings of nostalgia (it was first published in the 90s), and just for simple, easy escapism/enjoyment. Can someone please tell me what is so wrong about reading just for pleasure and not in some grand quest to better yourself and reflect on all the "deep" aspects of life and philosophy?

Found the teacher. God damn, y'all are as bad as stay at home mothers squawking, "um...actually, it's the hardest job in the world," crap.

Being a teacher is cushy as fuck. Boo-hoo you have to attend the school play and talent shows. You get 3 months of the year off (in b4, "um...actually...no, we make lesson plans and are forced to attend new training), the second you get tenure, short of getting caught diddling kids it's nearly impossible to get fired, and then since your god damn bullshit ass union is so fucking big, you hold the state hostage to give you bigger and bigger pensions to do even fucking less in retirement. And then you have the gall to say how unjust it is when someone suggests testing to weed out the good from the bad teachers, and oh wait here comes your union again calling for another strike.

Teachers are a god damn joke and one of the primary reasons this country is going to shit. They should all be fired, tenure abolished, pensions renegotiated, every public school turned private, and then forced to reapply for their jobs.
>>
>>7970925
Why would she bother putting in the extra time and effort that that would require.

I support testing teachers to make sure they aren't shit, but you have to be out of your god damn mind if you think we get paid well. Also, tenure isn't as easy to get as you think.
But abolishing the education system as we know it only to open it up to worse wages is fucking stupid. The only reason there are so many garbage teachers is because unless you have a weird desire to teacher a certain age group, the best and brightest (or even just good and bright) have no incentive to teach kids.
You want better teachers, fire the idiots and raise the pay for the new positions significantly so it isn't a bunch of washouts.

First of all, you sound like a freshman who's mad about their high school experience I doubt you "work" at the college as any more than a work-study.
Second, raising the pay to attract better teachers would solve that. Lowest common denominator educators wouldn't be the only ones interested in the job meaning the hiring pool would be bigger. College level pays more, so more people are interested and the schools have more choices when it comes to finding motivated people.

Wow mates, please chill for a moment.

While it's true that several prominent economists (most obviously Friedman) have called for privatized education, there's several negative effects of privatization that makes it undesirable in practice. Most obviously you have the problem that better education leads to better financial outcomes later in life. If education is completely privatized, poor families will be unable to afford it, and most likely stay poor forever.

There's definitely room for improvement, but the slash-and-burn Ayn Rand route almost certainly isn't the way. Some people have very interesting ideas about vouchers, but the only way to implement that properly would likely necessitate an increase in the overall education budget, something people will most likely not want to do.

>>7974260
Let's also acknowledge that unions aren't inherently good, they're just another factor in the market. They do provide collective bargaining rights, which is important (as it protects employees from employers with market power), but unions themselves can get market power, which can be quite dangerous. A shitty union can do just as much harm as a shitty boss.

That being said, most teachers' unions in America are alright. New York may be an exception, and my own high school teachers all hated their union (which supposedly had some of the highest fees in the country despite doing almost nothing), but I don't think that teachers' unions are bad on the whole. That being said, I'd need to see an actual study before making any value judgement about this.

These literature and there's escapism in book form. Same as there are intelligent magazines and then there are gossip rags that mainly feature gossip, shit paparazzi pics and some "fashion" pages on how to imitate some celeb's look on cheap crap available from the high street chains for under fifty or such. There are also intelligent movies, and then there are mind-numbing comedies.

Sometimes people (and some people) choose to empty their minds via consuming media and relax, instead of wanting something challenging that'd make them think. Romance and Fantasy are escapism.
>>
>>7971252
>>7978854
Not them but it's true. The effects it had on how YA and fantasy started to get seriously shouldn't be underestimated. Also it was a MASSIVE cultural thing when the books were coming out, for around 5 or 6 years non-stop, everywhere. A generation of kids sort of grew up reading. There hadn't been book series where people literally dress up as the characters the world over and gather to wait outside book shops for the midnight opening before that. Not a lot after, either.

Also, it got a lot of people into reading. That shouldn't be underestimated, either.

Harry Potter was a seismic cultural juggernaut. It may not be great literature, but it was influential as fuck and if you try to deny that you're just blinded by "it's just YA, it can't be significant" bias.

>I think about him all the time, must be due to hating him so much
>forced time limit plot device ex machina
>suddenly a tragedy in the dude's past reveals itself; he's not an asshole, he's just hurt
>oh god I love him how can I have been so blind
>teary-eyed confession after some dramatic twists
>some more passionate sex
>dream wedding
>heroine insanely rich now lol with a strapping hubby I can't believe it I'm so happy

Occasionally the man will be overly controlling (presented as being commandeering or whatever) but usually it's not "rape", it's the man being insistent and the woman wanting to tell him to sod off but eventually unable to resist the swirling storm of passion that's been brewing within her since that fateful afternoon their eyes first met 5 days ago at the country fair, or something, she knows it's wrong but wants it so bad.

My late grandma went crazy for romance novels in her last decade, our summer place has literally piles of this stuff and not many other books to read. Did you know Harlequin had a service where you could get that shit delivered to your house on a twice-monthly basis? I didn't.

Yes, I'm aware that plebs read fiction for entertainment. Thank you for pointing it out.

I agree that it was a big cultural thing in the early 2000s but

>got people into reading
>they only read Harry Potter

Doesn't really count

>>7979875
Thank god I know which people love Harry Potter, so I can away around from those cringe people.

>What makes them read, say, Game of Throne rather than a history or science book? Why are adults compelled to read children YA

>Yes, I'm aware that plebs read fiction for entertainment.
Why did you ask, if you're going to get all huffy about it :D
>>
>>7980021
Yeah, people who read romance novels are pretty fucking cringe, just like white men who get off cuck porn.

I didn't get huffy about it. I said thank you in a sincere way, because your post is well thought and written.

Just keep the public option, but let savvy parents have vouchers if they want.

The tards and rejects will go public and serve as an underclass to exploit and feed off of.
The potential middle classers with good genes will go to the new private options and not be contaminated with mediocrity.

It's a win-win for everyone.
