I've been looking for this collection (anthology, if you want to be a bastard about it) of mythical short stories for about 8, maybe 10 years now. I'll post as much as I remember about it, including the last sentence of the story I'm looking for. I have no clue what the cover looks like, (it was torn off by a sibling) or any of the authors, or even any names of the short stories in this collection. What i do remember is a shitty cliffnotes summary for you: A god finds himself in a waiting room, inexplicably, as he was just swimming with dolphins in underwater ruins moments before. The man finds himself being called to the service desk to sign himself in the waiting room. There's an attendant explaining to him that once a god has lost too many followers, and not enough people worship the god to keep his faith alive, they are sent to the waiting room to be resurrected back on earth as a mortal before the end of existence. There's a clock on the wall that represents how much time is left until the end of everything. (I forgot how much time is represented in one minute on the clock, but there was an overtone of panic in the God's attention towards the clock) The attendant is constantly shape shifting, perhaps to show the current attire of rebellion of the faithless. While quipping and debunking all the choices and lifestyle ideas of the God's resurrection plans. Zeus makes an appearance, boasting his plan to be placed in California as a porn star, while the attendant (wearing orange hair, black clothes, facial piercings and an upside down cross) tells Zeus to be careful, as he's going to be mortal, and he can catch AIDS, and die early. Explaining that was Aphrodite's fate when she was sent to a brothel in Nevada. The desk clerk shifts a few more times before someone asks about Jesus, and he explains he had a good run, but had been replaced by (I wish I remember the guy's name). The time is getting closer to 12:00, and there's some internal dialog, and some observation about the room, while the expired God focuses on the clock. The last sentence in the story is as follows: "Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Tic-" anything else I remember I'll post on here, I've been looking forever, so I'm pretty sure someone here would have read it.
I'd say that the best character in all of the myths is Achilles. He was so beautifully written. He had a great understanding of the world around him. He is the only of the Achaeans brave enough to stand up against Agamemnon. In my current Greek class we read Book 24 of the Iliad. I even teared up when Achilles and Priam were sharing in their misery.
