I like the first part, it's very imaginative, creates a great atmosphere, but the second is truly amazing, it's simple yet so relatable.

It's not that deep. Our hero establishes his philosophical stance, the second part is a living argument (or not) of it. All you should know about beforehand is Russian utopianism in the 1800s.
It's the skeleton key to the rest of his books.
