oh shit I just realised

is the Metamorphosis about becoming a NEET?
>>

yes OP, a hundred year old novel is about a lifestyle that was shat out by modern society
>>
That directly contradicts the text. Gregor gets up every morning at 5 am to provide for his entire family—total opposite of a NEET.

The common interpretation is that his transformation into an insect is a metaphorical mirroring of industrial society's transformation of him into a flywheel in a vast, impersonal machine...

this is why it's one of my least favorite of his stories.. too pat
>>
>>7842192
yeah he wakes up every morning to provide for his family and then one morning simply stops. his family are unsympathetic and disgusted with him.
>>

it's about becoming a gay

Is Metamorphoses the successor to Bartleby?
>>
>>7842261
Yeah I can definitely see the connection, though it's probably non-intentional.

Any other books with a similar theme to those two? Especially Bartleby, I reallly enjoyed that one.

not a NEET
>>7842647
even 100 years ago you could survive one way or another without a 'real' employment, NEET on the other hand means that you are dependent on cash from the guvment, or your parents
>>
Metamorphosis is about precisely what you want it to be about.
>>
>>7842828
>not a NEET
Yes he was.

>NEET on the other hand means that you are dependent on cash from the guvment, or your parents
NEET means "Not in Education, Employment, or Training". Whether you live in a tub and beg in the streets or live in an attic room and beg from the government makes no difference.

No. Acronym aside, NEET culture is about being a socially inept 20+ year old with no actual skills, who spends all of his time inside his room on boards like /r9k/. NEET is basically a subdivision of hikikomori who at least might work from home and make money, just not go outside or interact with people. In other words NEET is an introvert phenomenon, while people like Diogenes were extroverted to the extreme
>>
Is there any modern philosophical work that argues about NEETdom or hikikomoris explicitly?
>>
>>7842155
It's about un-becoming human and how the other humans deal with that. That means it's about becoming NEET, alienated, ill, all that and other forms of decay you can think of.
>>
>>7842891
Cool definition but you're completely wrong. NEET stands for Not in Education, Employment, or Training.
It means not following standard societal rules laid out for us since birth ie you need to go to college and after college you need a job in order to be a normal person. Even if you spend all of your time learning you're still seen as a failure to society.
>>
>>7842871
where are the graphic sex scenes then?
>>
>>7843046
cute definition but NEET means Not in Education, Employment, or Training
It means you are too lazy and/or socially inept to network and get out into the real world, find a job, relationships etc. You spend all your time on your computer in your parents basement, because you have no means of providing for yourself, nor are you making an effort to do so in the foreseeable future.
>>
>>7842891
NEET just means unemployed non-student m8, there's no necessary social awkwardness or subculture involved.

A hikikomori is a shut-in. A lot of shut-ins are NEET and a decent percentage of NEETs may be shut-ins, but one does not imply the other. /jp/ doesn't represent all NEETs.
>>
>>7843054
Nice projecting
>>
>>7842155
It's clearly about the struggle with terminal illness and grappling with your own mortality as you slowly become less and less functional, before finally accepting death when you realise that your life is stopping those around you from functioning properly. That's why there's the cute bit at the end where the rest of his family leave the house and go out into the light.
