Women who are interested in literature are always either utter plebs or completely patrician in my experience. I've never met one who would be familiar with Whitman (beyond the fact that some of his work is homoerotic) and not fifteen other Civil War-era American poets I've never heard of, minor structural and thematic details about their work, and the positions taken by every major contemporary and modern critic on it.
