the only stuff you should really know as background for most writing are ancient mythology(particularly the greeks and the bible - for western writers anyway) and then maybe a few old classics (shakespeare, whitman if youre american, dante etc)

i implied you do need to have understanding of canonical texts, but they're not a necessity to enjoy or appreciate every text, you don't have to understand every reference in the waste land to appreciate it, it's not a game of 'guess what this refers too'

It's a good piece of post southern Gothic with elements of magical realism. It's not transcendent but it has some good atmosphere and there are some really great prose moments. Contrary to shitposters it's not about "muh blackness" but guilt.
