What's a good way to start reading history? Something that would give me a basic overview and a good starting point, not something that delves too much into details of specific periods.

Do you realise how broad history is? You need to narrow it down a little bit.

If you're interested in classical history, starting with that might be a good idea. Just choose between east or west
