I'm reading an online translation by Ian Johnston and I like it so far. Took out a copy of one by Richard Lattimore from the library and found it much more difficult so I went back to the online one. Something about the phrases and sentence structure just makes it easier to follow

My favourites are Fagles for the Iliad and Fitzgerald for the Odyssey

Allocate a couple of months to Homer, buy 3 translations (make them as different from each other as possible), buy a bunch of secondary lit, and dive in.

imo Lattimore is best, he uses 6-beat lines but no strict meter (all the lines correspond to the original Greek) but if you like iambic pentameter Fitzgerald is likely best bet.

Fagles is a dweeb to be honest, plus his trannies have those fucking uneven pages which is a real downer fasho

Is the T.E Lawrence translation of The Odyssey /lit/ approved?

Which translation is the most literal/scholarly? I've read Fagles and I'm looking for something different this time. Notes are also a plus.
