Is this still the most agreed on collection of essential books to read to begin becoming "well read"? I'm in high school and am looking for a list of books I can read in my downtime alongside what's assigned for English so I can have some basis for exploring into some slightly less well known stuff. I just want to read stuff that's good, and will allow me to read other books more effectively. Sorry for being in High School, I know admitting to being that young is something of a faux pas on 4chan, but you guys seem generally constructive.
This is the pleb reading list that may or may not help you realize you actually like reading and move onto better novels

To killa mockingbird is bad and is worthless for anything past the political commentary

Read what interests you famm, I was reading YA fiction and pulp fantasy until I was like 18-19. No one really cares how intelligent or well-read you are.

This. That being said, definitely read a few of the texts that stand out to you in that info graph.
I'm glad that I read 1984. 1984 was largely influenced by Zamiatin's We, which was influenced heavily by Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground. Notes has become a favorite of mine and I love seeing how various texts influenced each other on a sort of timeline.

Thanks, and I agree that I should read what interests me, but I just am fascinated by some of the more impenetrable books I see on that list, like Gravity's Rainbow, and Infinite Jest. I just don't have the critical analysis skills to *really* read those books. I was looking for books I could use to teach myself how to be able to read books like that. Also, thanks for taking the time to honestly reply guys.

Look anyone can read those books. It's words on a page, don't build them up to be so much. Check them out at a library, give them a shot, if you don't like it return it and get a new one.
If you are American maybe

American Psycho is neither good nor significant and deserves to be removed from that list; not only removed but denounced as a juvenile's attempt to justify his own decadence without even having the decency to do it with prose that could not be produced by any eighth grader familiar with a few porno sites.
