German literature is great and all but if I want to read some of the more niche genres I like, I have to look elsewhere. Even for mainstream stuff like Science Fiction and Fantasy, Germans are extremely narrowminded and would rather read the n'th Perry Rhodan or Markus Heitz who is a big deal in Germany, despite being shit and literally unknown everywhere else which is for the best.

Zbigniew Herbert has some amazing essays and fascinating poetry. Ryszard Kapuściński - wow. Few Joanna's Bator works capture the Polish spirit. Latest Tokarczuk book - "Księgi Jakubowe" is surprisingly good. Also Jacek Dehnel has great writing skills. There are many more polish autors like this above, I just choose the most recent ones.
