When will rap lyrics be recognized as modern poetry?

Not talking about "fuck bitches get money" (even though I do think that has a deeper philosophical meaning), but rap lyrics in general about life, issues, politics, love, etc.
Be open-minded.
>>
It's called slam poetry, and it'll never be legitimate.
If it's "legitimate," then it has to be open to criticism. And slam poetry is just awful. It could never stand it.
>>
Being open-minded doesn't mean finding contrived meaning in things that have no other meaning than what they say.

He lives in a four by two glass box that reminds me of my head
I wish my floor would have rocks, but it's covered with puddles instead
If I could be him, life would be great
I could erase this permanent frown
I wouldn't even be held down by my own weight
I woke up walked to the tank to hear his thoughts on yesterday
How was it? I asked And after a tap on the glass
He looked my way then gave me this depressed expression
Impressed its best just to say
Besides the tides and the grey skies, it was ok!
And I said Hey mister fish, you did all that you wish
You got nothing to complain about while hanging out in this abyss
Well he replied "Well existence is bliss, there's so much that you miss
Besides get off the trip, happiness is just a myth"
I said "Living in water is extremely more peaceful than life confined to a mind
Blinded by evil, and forced to see through these two peep holes
It seems I've redeemed freedom, not being limited by walls
That only mean I qualify as ground for the sky when it falls
That only mean I qualify as ground for the sky when it falls
That only mean I qualify as ground for the sky when it falls
That only mean I qualify as ground for the sky when it falls'
But Mr. Fish just laughed as I went on and on and on
So I interrupted his chuckle, putting up a middle finger
And he boldly told me it's too bad I'm was such a thinker
So Arrogantly I asked "How could someone think too much?"
He added that insanity lingers and thoughts brought me to the brink of such
He said "You live inside a head that reminds me of my glass box"
And everyone's the same; all brains are contained by your reality frame
And chained to the terrain, it's trained hard not to change
And once you see what I've explained you hit the jackpot"
And at that very moment it was like my eyes really opened
The air that previously surrounded me was now an ocean
Still totally invisible except for minor pieces of debris
Then Mr. Fish pushed up to the glass and he looked just like me
My whole world spun around, I didn't understand
But I realised I was no longer a man
So I thought about what he said and asked him what was going on
And he said, "You didn't know it but you where the fish all along"
He said, "Congratulations, you did it, you broke free
You're just a fish, like the rest of humanity"
Now it took me a long time to get adjusted to this tank
But now I know what I am, and so to that man I give thanks
I've always lived inside this glass box that reminds him of his head
It just goes to show ya that your mind is your own monster
Reality is what you make it, if you take it away
You're just a fish, like me, swimming in the powdered water

It's a very unsophisticated form, and it is best like that. The most "deep" rap i've heard is at the literary level of something like fight club (if that).

It's not a good form for poetry in the traditional sense.

put the pussy in a sarcophagus is a great rap lyric

Why do you need it to be recognized as modern poetry?

I actually like rap from time to time but I don't see the need to call it anything else than rap.

busdriver's pretty great I guess

who gives a shit tho. it's like that oscar thing. why people be so desperate to work they way into things that hate em know whamean.

if the others want to recognize something in art people produce out of their own joy for it, later, why not. but they can't be just pining for recognition if there's nothing really to show for it. like that one korean nobel prize thing in that thread yesterday. it's just silly.

I instantly knew that was Eyedea. I love him

But that's just a story of The Axolotl. Honestly, I think there's more from By the Throat that could be poetic than off of First Born (and I'm a HUGE fan of First Born and Eyedea In general)

When it's a dead artform. White people love music that black people don't listen to anymore.
>>
>>7739720
The whole point of rap is to bluntly say how shit the world we live in is in order to spark a change
Artistic value is irrelevant. At least that is what rap was suposed to be untill it was bastardized

Not true at all. You're thinking of jazz.

aesop rock has no flow, his internal rhyme structures (if present) are a mess, and he greatly overestimates his own intelligence and wit.

what a horrible, no-good, very bad rapper.
