What the hell kind of contest was this?
What was the grand prize?
Where's the Thrawn Trilogy?
>>7733225
When I was in college there was a book collection contest and I entered my Star Wars collection and I got second place for undergraduates.
>>7733228
>This exists in America.
>>7733228
What was the first place like?
And what about my third question?
>>7733236
Don't remember what the grand prize was. And the Thrawn trilogy is shit.

posting a shelf worthy of this thread
booksehlf threads can either turn out semi decent with patrician/interesting shelves (rare, happens ~20% of the time) or into total shitfests. this one is headed firmly towards the latter.

mate no trying to offend you but holy shit, dutch looks completely bananas. I can pick some stuff of german, even some swedish / norwegian in song names and that sort of thing, but dutch and finnish are just fucking crazy. Why did it end so different from other germanic languages?
>>7734627
The post we deserve but not the one we need right now

also, I know finnish and dutch have no relation whatsoever

Hoi, tweede Nederlander die dat boek gelezen heeft!
>>7734638
I know German and actually Dutch isn't all that different from what I can tell, I don't speak the language but I can make out some words.
For example anon's
"De goddelijke komedie" would be
"Die Göttliche Komödie" in German, Dutch is spelled all fucked up but the words are still rather similar.
It's sort of like if a child that knows letters, but has no clue how to spell, tried to type up German words.
I have no idea what's wrong with the Finns though.
some books i found in storage from my childhood
on top is just whatever I'm currently reading that i keep on my desk

oh i thought you meant it was my first post and you'd been following my posts on /lit/. thought i had my first stalker. kind of disappointed.
Reading some of your comments, I realize you guys don't read. You just pretend for whatever sadistic reason and talk shit. This isn't a damn race.
Emerson said he'd rather never read a book than become a satellite instead of his own system.
You guys are the satellites. You base all of your ideas on per-conceived notions instead of taking inspiration from books.
It's as if you're trying to have an objectively good taste or some shit.
A bit chaotic right now but here part I

Wow I literally just finished writing an essay on The American Scholar. What do you think about it?
I think his framework of activity is really interesting and the imagery he uses is beautiful in its sort of not-interconnected, dissociative way. also the respiratory metaphor for his theory of books is interesting in the way it plays out throughout the speech.
>>7736504
Yeah I got it for a course I'm in right now on American Lit. Unfortunately it's only a semester, so we can't dive into a lot of the actual text, for time reasons. I'm probably going to take a more focused 20th century american lit course next year, to make up for this one's brevity.
>>7736601
exactly. I can't understand these people who buy brand new books.
If I want a specific edition of something hard to find, I might browse second hand stores, but a brand new book? Ugh, I'd rather spend the money on food clothes or cute girls.
Hello it's 2016. Hello, literally every book is free and online.

why do you like DH so much... I've recently read Women and Men and was a bit let down. Not saying it wasn't great book, but it didn't really wow me like some of the other modernist classics.

pretty sure he was gay... he was married to a woman but he once said something to the effect of: the closest thing I've ever came to true love was a 14 year old boy in my childhood mining town

How is alphabetical autistic? It's the most normal and boring way to sort.
Chronological is the autist way.
>>7739769
i thought so too.. look around on these bookshelf threads though. Almost nobody has the decency to alphabetize
>>7739789
Alphabetization is useless when you have over a certain number of books though. You get no sense of the development of literature across era or area or any idea of what you have most of, sans specific authors, when your eyes trail over the shelves.
Especially useless for non-fiction.
