I'm reading a lot of Mishima's work right now and I'm already worried I'll reach the end of it soon.

Can you recommend me any authors who share his aesthetic vision? I want to read about beautiful death and violent elegance. The Japanese historical context is also interesting but not necessary.

It seems like your suggestions are all about historical, factual accounts of war. Obviously I haven't read them, so maybe I'm mistaken. But I'm more interested in the conflict of brutality and elegance that defines his style.

I'm sorry if my words don't adequately describe it.

Junger, Eumswil, Storm of Steel, and my favorite, On the Marble Cliffs.

The Way of a Serpent by Torgny Lindgren

Silence by Endo

No Longer Human by Dazai

Master of Go by Kawabata

They dont espouse the bodily perfection thing, but have a similar prose/thematic aesthetic, while Junger is the traditionalist without being overtly fascist.

How was Mishima for real? Threw an awkward hissy fit at an army base, which wasn't taken seriously at all, as an excuse to off himself and fucked up his soduku because his effeminate butt buddies failed to chop his head off while he was stabbing himself in the gut.

It was such a farce and a failure that you should be embarrassed to even bring it up as a dedicated Mishima dick rider.

Sick b8. Mann was actually very concerned about his reputation in Germany. He also said that "it is hard to live in exile. It is only made easier by the poisened atmosphere that rules Germany right now. Germany is wherever I am. I carry the German culture with me." (1938)

He obviously felt very attached to Germany, and seems to be some kind of 'true' patriot who loves his country for its culture, values and history; things that he didn't see in Nazi Germany anymore, that's why he emigrated in 1933 right after the nazis rose to power.

On topic:
I think Radiguet influenced Mishima a lot, so check out his body of work (it's pretty small because Radiguet died very young obviously).

Also I think a lot of ideas that he got about death come from (or at least coincide with) Rilke's thoughts about death in the beginning of Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge.

On a number of occasions he spoke about how he regretted dodging draft. He said he was psyched up for war but then when he was being examined by the doctor he said he was frequently coughing, had shortness of breath and would often cough up blood (giving the symptoms of tuberculosis)

There was nothing wrong with him, he was a draft dodger. You can see for yourself with a quick google search.

You've been shitposting for the entire thread now. Exactly what is your motivation here?

Mishima's entire existence is fascinating not only because of his right wing nationalism but because he was the last real example of literary Jap masculinity before it was sent on a path of extinction via the shitty degenerate anime and below-replacement birthrates that we are now seeing post-WW2. Does the fact that Mishima was maybe a closet bisexual, and that his attempt at ritual suicide was botched (dying the way he did was still pretty fucking hardcore, even moreso that it was botched) even matter considering his contributions to literature and aesthetic theory?

Well, his post works regardless how many people he addresses.

I honestly don't even agree with most of Mishima's political views and I think many people project their own beliefs onto him and put words into his mouth.
But I can still respect that he lived and died by his words rather than becoming a person he despised.
>>
>>7740823
I'm only three of those posts, personally.

He is not a 'last real example' of masculinity. He's already beyond its reach, therefore he spent his life roleplaying what he considered masculinity to be.

In that sense he's the oriental Hemingway. And like Hemingway, he has a lot of silly people thinking he's the real deal, while the defining, interesting trait of both of them is that they are lacking the very thing they are obsessed with and that they personify the desire to be something they are not, with all the internal conflict that comes with that.

People often don't notice this, and often they don't want to notice it and if I were to guess it is often because the readers they attract are themselves looking for masculinity, and want writers like this to look up to, even if it means making themselves blind to what they are in order to turn them into representations of the thing they strive for.
>>
>>7741019
>He is not a 'last real example' of masculinity

I didn't say that. I said he's the last real example of Jap masculinity, just as Hemingway was a confused and broken artifact of his time, because Jap males on average are nowadays more concerned with staying in their rooms and watching anime and masturbating all day than they are with reproducing to replacement rate.

For all his faults, which include the misguided reach toward "authentic" masculinity, Mishima stands as a swan song for an Asian civilization that has since become vulgar and sad (anime), and thus is a tragic and heroic figure.

Strict resistance toward immigration is one of the few positives for the Japs, but it also illuminates why they're dying. You need replacement

>adult love of anime is akin to american adult love of superhero movies except more stigmatized in mainstream culture

I would be the first to criticize capeshit but once again it's endemic, not causal. Capeshit in the west and anime in the east share a common root, and it's too uncomfortable to point this out on an anime website. That there are people going this length to defend ching chong toons on the literature board of a ching chong toon website is predetermined and also sad

>a pool of useless manchildren

That's because of Mexicans. America might not seem to be dying out when you look at the numbers, but white Americans are quickly becoming a minority in the USA.

Westerners are getting replaced by savages, Japs aren't, but that's the only difference.

>You use "Westerners" as a colloquialism but "The West" includes much of Europe. In which case some white Westerners are getting replaced by savages for cheap votes and cheap labour, but they still don't match the abysmal birth replacement rate of Japs
They don't match the birth raplacement rate because there is no one monitoring how much of the reproduction is done by non-ethnic Europeans.

>Just admit you're an anime-watching fatass weeb and move on to the next meme-thread about DFW
I don't even watch anime, but to say Japan is more fucked than the Western world is silly. If anything they're less fucked.

I have a somewhat related question. I can't ask /tv/ because they are very busy with their memes and underage feet.

Are there any good Mishima movies? In style I mean. Not necessarily based on his work or starring him.

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters was pretty nice. Enjō is on my watch list. I guess Mr Christmas Mr Lawrence is somewhat relevant with its death defying martyr theme and a character heavily inspired by Mishima.
His short film patriotism of course.
Maybe Derek Jarman's St Sebastian if you're really into the homosex.

The illiad does share similar themes with Mishima's works such as the link between death and glory making it pretty obvious in the narrative.
>>
>>7743206
I remember from a previous /lit/ thread about Mishima that Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex had a character and plot line based off of Mishima and his work

Hello /pol/ ! maybe if you started fucking instead of being a whiny bitch here that will change.

It was the shite 2nd season. It had people cutting their own/each others heads off. It wasn't particularly related other than using swords for violent political action.
>>
>>7745670
That's not correct.
The usual interpretation is that Kazundo Gouda and Patrick Sylvestre's essays are based on Mishima - their motives are similar, too (a return to Imperial Japan via a violent uprising)
>>
>>7745718
>Patrick Sylvestre
Who is that? Only information I get is on a Swedish Footballer.

I had not really caught the connection to Mishima until that /lit/ anon pointed it out
Is Kuze like Mishima because isn't his face modeled after Greek statues thus why he doesn't talk?
I think I remember Mishima talking about his fascination with Greek statues
>>
>>7746324
*why his mouth doesn't move when he talks
>>
>>7746324
I don't know about fascination. He just went on holidays to Kreta (I think?) and decided to start bodybuilding to look like a hot Greek statue.

They quote him on that in the 80s documentary on youtube. Maybe that's why you remember it.
>>
>>7745723
Same. Who is this Patrick Sylvestre and what does he have to do with Japanese literature?

The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with the Sea is a pretty good intro I suppose. Gives you a lot of the basic ideas throughout his work and has some beautifully written passages. Confessions of a Mask isn't a bad entry either though or Temple of the Golden Pavilion.

Probably the one named Patriotism. I think you will be a little disappointed though. He is Japanese and speaking for Japanese culture and Japanese masculinity. Not some all encompassing patriotism you can attach yourself to with your national background.

There's also a lot of other aspects to his character that won't fit the narrative of nationalistic big daddy.

i was fearing that. i was reminded of how i watched tarkovskys mirror the other day and how much of an unreletable experience it was because of how much it refers to russian history.
