So I'm entering a competition where I have to write something in 500 words. The restrictions are deliberately broad so the format of the piece could essentially be anything. I'd rather not write some pretentious mini-essay or meditation, but an actual story. However there's not much story you can tell in only 500 words.

Are there any good short stories written by good writers that are around 500 words? And I mean ones that actually have a narrative, characters etc.

You can write just about anything in 500 words. I'd leave out dialogue though, or focus on a single conversation.
That'd actually be pretty good–focus on a single conversation and flesh it out in 500 words. Probably not too unique, but it could be a gem if you put work into it.

This was my initial plan but I think it'd be hard to keep the readers attention. The judges will have to thousands of entries like this. And it's hard to deep in such a short space without sounding pretentious.
