What are the best representatives of "look I'm not claiming gassing Jews was good but mostly the Third Reich was about saving Germany/Europe from Bolshevism and you'd all be commies right now if it wasn't for that" apologetics? Ideally literary

I know Junger is kind of ambiguous in his allegiances, and I know Schmitt never denazified, also about Gehlen. Does anyone know any others, especially representations in literature?

Nah, it's accessible as long as English isn't your third language or something. It's not theoretically dense or anything like that?

It might be a bit hard if you aren't already somewhat familiar with late Roman history. Some kind of skeletal framework might be helpful, even just reading the Wikipedia article first and keeping a chart of emperors/timeframes. But even that isn't really necessary.

It's really beautiful prose but it's not Joycean or anything. You should still be fine.

Enjoy. It's a great book. Try to think of it as a tour of antiquity with your stuffy English gentleman friend rather than a monograph and it's a lot more fun. Gibbon is like a fucking encyclopaedia.

Oh also, protip: Get a FOOTNOTED version, and try to get the current (Penguin) edition with updated footnotes. Bury did the 1900~ one that's available online.

They are discursive footnotes, and they are lengthy and frequent. Don't be caught jumping back to endnotes every 3 seconds.

>>7716442
Yes it does. It's not optional. The brain doesn't allow you to rationalise killing yourself unless you're incredibly depressed.
>>
>>7716234
its not cognitive dissonance
you could just as easily say - if life is pointless then why commit suicide?
either way it doesnt matter
in fact committing suicide implies that your life does have some sort of meaning if youre putting in the effort to remove it

>>
>>7716475
But the brain's of living things fundamentally serve themselves and their preservation. It's like asking why an animal in the wild doesn't just rationalise killing itself if it has no religion/God; the point is the basic faculties of the brains of all living things are hard-wired to maintain survival, and overrule anything else.

Why is the NY Times now calling the San Bernadino shooter a "terrorist"? For weeks after the attack they called it "workplace violence", now today when Obama says we have to break the encryption on iOS in order to keep us safe the NY Times now says it was "one of the worst attacks on American soil since 9/11". What happened? How did it go from workplace violence to the worst terror attack since 9/11?
>>
>>7716505
I'd say it's far easier for a religious person killing themselves in the name of God to rationalise that behaviour than it is for an atheist to. I guess if you're non religious, you believe this universe is all you have and so you've got no choice but to make the best of it, there's not second chance.

Content is great but the book itself is unnecessarily long. You learn how biased human thought process can be and the possible reasons for that from an evolutionary stand point. The author explains everything in details, including the experiments that led to the conclusions. You could probably get a book with similar content but without the tedious experiment talks

I really liked this one, but the title makes it seem like fedora-tipping (it's not)

the premise is that god secretly comes to earth as a human and is killed. no resurrection. dead. people eventually figure out that the person was god and now there's no more god. what now? the world reacts. /lit/fags should love it because everyone turns to either evolutionary psych or philosophy (po-mo, in this case) to derive meaning. so /sci/ vs /lit/ with no christposting.

Question 1
The original Greek writings of Plato: did they have punctuation? If not, how people knew when to stop? I also heard that the words were all written together, with no separation between them, but I doubt that. For example, this speech:

>When Socrates had done speaking, the company applauded, and Aristophanes was beginning to say something in answer to the allusion which Socrates had made to his own speech, when suddenly there was a great knocking at the door of the house, as of revellers, and the sound of a flute-girl was heard. Agathon told the attendants to go and see who were the intruders. "If they are friends of ours," he said, "invite them in, but if not, say that the drinking is over." A little while afterwards they heard the voice of Alcibiades resounding in the court; he was in a great state of intoxication and kept roaring and shouting "Where is Agathon? Lead me to Agathon," and at length, supported by the flute-girl and some of his attendants, he found his way to them. "Hail, friends," he said, appearing-at the door crown, with a massive garland of ivy and violets, his head flowing with ribands. "Will you have a very drunken man as a companion of your revels? Or shall I crown Agathon, which was my intention in coming, and go away? For I was unable to come yesterday, and therefore I am here to-day, carrying on my head these ribands, that taking them from my own head, I may crown the head of this fairest and wisest of men, as I may be allowed to call him. Will you laugh at me because I am drunk? Yet I know very well that I am speaking the truth, although you may laugh. But first tell me; if I come in shall we have the understanding of which I spoke? Will you drink with me or not?"

If we translated the original Greek without any editing and additions, how would it look like?

Question 2
We know that Iambic Pentameter has 10 beats in its metric system. What’s the longest verse (with more beats, with more metric space) verse ever used in a significant body of poetry in western art? Is it the metric of Homer?

How do I stop talking about myself in social situations.

I always refer to myself, I always bring the conversation back to me, and I almost never care about what the other person is talking about. Whats strange is that iv never noticed any narcissistic tendencies besides what iv mentioned above...unless narcissism exceeds aesthetics, because I dont care for my looks.

How do I become passive and give people the idea that I care. I dont want more friends nor do I want to appeal to anyone. Its just that I appreciate the art of socialization, and I want to feel like the person infront of me feels.

Not that guy but relationships aren't all they're cracked up to be: if you're desperate for a relationship and you rush into things, it's dreadful. If you try to prolong a relationship that doesn't work, it's dreadful. If you try to make a one night stand a relationship, it's dreadful. If you try and go into a relationship thinking it's all roses, it's dreadful.

When you wear rose-tinted glasses, all the red flags just look like flags.

not a waste of time either, but it didn't blow me away like seemingly everyone else. The bits set in the DR under Trujilo I enjoyed most. this is oddly the same as I felt about The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, the bits set in China where the soldier survives the Russian invasion was the only parts that I liked. I don't really like murakami, though. Diaz I still like, I'll read him again.

I must've read Drown like 50 times, though. maybe it was the fact that Oscar was such a dork is what simultaneously repulsed me and earned the praise from dorks who felt vindicated to be included by such a "cool" author?

Does anyone here think about their early memories and childhood and become scared by how bad your emotional to things was?

I knew most of the time I wasn't happy but looking back I realise how my innocent brand of truth was systematically destroyed by the terrible damaged people in my life.

I've learned plenty but I feel I can never be happy without some resolution of the injustice, especially consider I cant get away from most of my immediate family.

More of a journal post than a question but fuck it

If, as Derrida says, there is no "outside the text", ie
>words on a page are not representations of transcendent spoken words
>written statements do not point to ideal and objective realities
>the existence of a story in printed form does not mean that the story will still exist if 100 years on all books telling that story are gone

Then does that mean that anything you say is fundamentally disconnected from reality, and hence that telling an untruth is the same as telling a truth? Philosophically speaking.

No, he's Irish and Ireland isn't a part of the UK, although Northern Ireland technically is. However, at the time when Joyce was writing, he would've been a member of the UK.

It's just by today's standards, you wouldn't consider him so. Kinda like how George Orwell is considered British despite being born in India.

How do you define canon? And how do you define modern? Bloom has plenty of representatives of South America and Europe in his canon from the 20th century.

By modern I'd say still alive or died only in the last decade. It just seemed to me that while Britain was the granddaddy of English literature its great works seem all to be in the past, while America gets the spotlight for 20th century and contemporary English language literature.

Yeah I dunno, as a Brit I don't really rate any British writers who are around right now. But JG Ballard and Beryl Bainbridge both died in the last 10 years and are worth a mention.

I feel like you were talking about novelists but if you'll include playwrights then Tom Stoppard is still kicking around being the best in the world.

Otherwise.... Martin Amis, Ian McEwan and Julian Barnes are among the most lauded but frankly a bunch of twats without a single good book between them.

Zadie Smith and Hilary Mantel are both pretty okay, but I'd say they're storytellers rather than literary authors. Which is okay and all, but... yeah.
>>
>>7721423
>storytellers rather than literary authors
pray, do tell the difference.
>>
>>7721432

I knew someone would pull this shit. Are you serious or just being contrarian?

Whatever.

Wikipedia: 'Literary fiction, also known as serious fiction, is a term principally used for fictional works that hold literary merit, that is to say, they are works that offer deliberate social commentary, political criticism, or focus on the individual to explore some part of the human condition. Literary fiction is deliberately written in dialogue with existing works, created with the above aims in mind. Literary fiction is focused more on themes than on plot, and it is common for literary fiction to be taught and discussed in schools and universities.

Literary fiction is usually contrasted with paraliterary fiction (e.g., popular, commercial, or genre fiction). Some have described the difference between them in terms of analyzing reality (literary) rather than escaping reality (paraliterary). The contrasts between these two subsets of fiction is highly controversial among critics and scholars who study literature.'

Is it okay to be a pleb? Anyone else here a pleb and can relate?

I tried. I really tried to like "good" books, but most classics seem to bore me to death. I've stuck with C&P for around 180 pages now and it felt like a waste of time. I seem to have a lot more fun with pleb books like Murakami, Infinite Jest and general fantasy shit.

Ive never been to this board before but I have two types of books Im looking for.

The first is simple and maybe Google worthy - Unity and human consciousness melding together - people resisting it or it only happening on a small scale like a building full etc.I like this on a personal level more than a global scale.

The second is highly specific. I want to write a series in my life and one of the core elements will be long term war. I want books or stories that revolve around nations or groups teching against one another similar to real life.
>Cold war
>WWII Nazi/Russia tanks
>Rifle development/Gatling guns on Japanese Boshin war
>muskets in Sengoku Jidai
>extinction of heavy cavalry in europe

Thanks if you offer any books, I appreciate it a lot!

All top 100 polls from any board (ex: /tv/) will be end up with some good books on it and a lot of "board books" (or movies or games or what have you). This is because people know these works as they much of the board discussion is based on them.

So basically, the list ranges from 25-75% meme books depending on your opinion. You probably couldn't go wrong reading most of these as it will help you develop taste, but the way these polls work means that these actually aren't wholly representative of "/lit/ approved" works.

Thats why Infinite Jest is number one, because memes.

An online friend o' mine published a book online about 3 years ago. Since then he's only sold 13 copies, 12 not counting his sister.

I'm scared to death this will happen to me as well. I partly believe his 20 word overcomplicated title drove people away from it, and the fact that it's plot was about the "last musicians" in some nazi like world which kinda sounds cliche.

I haven't read the book though so maybe it just sucks dick. That and it's priced at $12.

So, \lit\, do you think I'll fail even if my writing is decent?
>>
>>7716227

I have pretty much lost my sense of humour and act very coldly towards people I don't know to the point where I have isolated myself from a girl I am very attracted towards. I think she may have been curious about me when we first noticed each other, but the last time I said "hi" to her she just stared past me and didn't respond. Felt so bad. If anyone is willing to read a spaghetti-tier greentext and offer some advice I'd appreciate it as /lit/ seems fairly balanced when it comes to dating and girls in general

financially, yes. Good writing ought to be fundamental artistic expression.

Then again you might have some luck if you work hard at churning out enough low quality pulp trash to get noticed. Even that's debatable though.
