I did not understand In the Hills. I understand that it involves people forming a fleshy wicker man like the ashinaga-tenaga, repeated a thousand times, but I think I missed the heart of the matter. I will give that it ties in flawlessly to the underlying symbolism of anatomically grounded horror.

I think Ligotti is pretty boss, to be honest. I guess my encounters with horror have been mostly of the Stephen King or Clive Barker sort and I expected Ligotti to be something like that but amped to 11. And he does have some visceral images that are kinda freaky (what was in the basement of "the malignant matrix", or what happened to the doctor in "his shadow shall rise to a higher house", both from Teatro). But I feel what makes Ligotti worth reading is not those flashes of horror, but how his stories are more about exploring the characters worldview in relation to a strange event. The horror aspect often being quite understated. And some his stories are surprisingly funny. The narrator of "the clown puppet" is clearly insane but doesn't know it. And "nethescurial" is quite amusing in how it's actually taking the piss on the typical Lovecraftian pastiches before it gets serious.
