I usually favor translations unless it's a reasonably simple English, but books like Ulysses are *designed* to read them in English, no matter how hard that can be.

I saw a translated version the other day where about a fifth of the book was a huge table of English expressions used in the original text, and their true meaning. Why not just read the goddamn book in English?

>>
>>7685421
No. As Pound noted, particularly musical writing--what he called "melopoeia"--doesn't translate well, so unless the translater was a great writer himself, it's likely that the translation will be lacking in one of the original's best qualities.

>>7684894

I am the guy who posted the pic with the italian translations and right now the only books I read in a Newton Compton edition are Ulysses and Brothers Karamazov. And both were very good.

I have Potrait Of A Lady in the backlog but I read positive things about it.

And if you are trying to be objective you should know that the works of different people are by definition different works.
>>
>>7686626
The point should be that the biggest publishers have the best translators or editions.
I read a lot of things by Newton but if I can find an alternative I go with it.
The ideal would be to make a comparison with the original text but, you know, at that point I'd be reading the original. I can only trust the general thought on the editions, if I can find it.

being this mad can not be healthy, kin
I know the cool kids at /lit/ told you the crimes is the better part but that was merely in jest, you see.

the other parts do much better at transmitting the horror of what's going down in the town with their subtle hints than the crimes. it's the difference between the discomfort produced by that thing that's just slightly out of your periferal vision and, say, marathoning all the "Bones" seasons. the part of the crimes is literally "Bones": the novel
>>
>>7686947
no you misunderstand - i thought the cool kids at /lit/ had told me the crimes was the worst part, which is why it was such a pleasant surprise that it wasn't
>>
>>7686869
hehehehe

I accidentally bought it and ended up keeping up because it looks cool. To read I'll be getting myself the Everyman's Library Ulysses

How much did that cost you? Get the epubs for free, amico.
>>
>>7687046
64 euro - 15 euro - 18,56 euro

>Get the epubs for free, amico.
It's not a big deal if
1 you actually read every book that you buy
2 you buy only 1-2 books per time.

epubs are great, but my usual schedule when i'm in the search of a book is:
bookstore --> library --> epubs
>>
>>7687103
>100 euro is not a big deal if you read the book
I fail to understand what difference does it make at the end of the month if you read the book or not.
No one more than me understands why having physical copies is nice but there's a limit. I have hundreds of books on my one-week-old Kobo, how the fuck could I have ever done that without piracy?

if you not, you don't have to spend other 100 euro the next month because you have to finish what you've started

>I have hundreds of books on my one-week-old Kobo
I've maybe two hundred books in my twelve-years-old shelves.

>100 euro is not a big deal if you read the books-->fixed for you
Yes, if are well made, can stand the time, and have given you a comfy read.

I have plenty of books myself. You seem to miss the point, not everyone can afford to regularly spend money on books, let alone €100 each month or two.
Personally I'm a fucking neet and yet I've just bought the Dying Earth series but only because the 4 books costed me €17.

So, if I really like a book I've read, loaned from the library or pirated on my Kobo, I'll buy it, otherwise not. This will generally be my behaviour from now on until I'll have a steady income, with few exceptions as with the Dying Earth series.

when you work 100 euro every 1-2 months are not a big deal, but I understand your point.
btw even I take some books from the library because are too expensive for what I need from them, like historical dictionaries, heraldry shit or other things to use as help for books.

Hope that you can find a job soon enough bro

I actually just finished an intern at a library, I've been there for 7 months and I've still managed to read nothing. Well, I've read some parts of a couple of books but that's it.
I wonder if could be elegible for a job in a library abroads, I don't know the second language of my region, it's a pain to find a decent job at this conditions. As a fellow Italianfag that should have given away my location.
I simply wish I could find an easy job that could permit me to pay for university. Sometimes I hate life.

I'm older than you, with high school degree and a work as butcher.

thanks God i've enough time for read great literature everyday, but I do it cause I like it, relaxes my brain, and feed my days. Not in order to have a/n monetary/academic payback.
Doesn't meter where life drags you, if you like reading, read.

to read Larva, which is his best, you need to at least be aware of Don Juan (Byron's especially) and Joyce in general. there's definitely a plot but imo it's more fun to focus on the puns and wordplays --which are necessary to decode what's going on anyway. honestly just jump in and have fun, family

I'm happy with both volumes. They are nice quality and very complete (including some poems that had been unpublished). I have actually read much of the commentary yet so I can't really vouch for that but it appears to be good. I just looked and there are over 100 pages of notes and commentary just on The Waste Land. I only recently got them so I could flesh out Eliot's works and to start diving into them more critically but haven't had time yet. Picked them up after the recommendation from NYRB a couple weeks back.
>>
>>7690639
It also had things like an editorial composit version of the earliest drafts from The Waste Land so that it can be compared with the published poem.
>>
>>7686744
How is the Ice Trilogy? It seems like an interesting idea.
