What is the saddest piece of literature you have ever read? I haven't read a sad book in years and want to order a few on Amazon. I just started grad school. Some of my favorite sad books are: Where the red fern grows, Night, Flowers for algernon, of Mice and Men, and the Catcher in the rye

If you don't mind Vonnegut, sirens of titan was basically depression porn.

there are some very sad scenes in James Michener's Hawaii

For being science fiction and incredibly ridiculous at points, that book had me feel too many feels.

It catches you off guard because of how ridiculous it is at face value.

Uncle Vanya. Not saddest but at appropriate length.

Well, you posted a pic of a weird taliban with a portuguese flag on his head and you don't know about the Book of Disquiet?
I can't even finish that shit.

did you not read any "sad books" between high school and grad school?

I just read The Fratricides by Nikos Kazantzakis. It was surprisingly emotional, especially Father Yannaros' fervant prayers. I'm fairly secular and have no idea about orthodox tradition, but his relationship with god in the midst of the war was really touching. probably the saddest work i can fully recall.
