Summarize your novel

>In 1850, a misanthropic but naive Russian teenager leaves Siberia for Alaska. After accidentally killing a renowned bandit, he embarks on a spiritual and physical journey across the American West.
>Satirical comedy most closely influenced by Voltaire, Dostoevsky, and Joyce.
>Incorporates Western philosophy and history throughout.

noir detective story of a struggling veteran of the Boer Wars who decided to become a detective in Russian-occupied 1890s Warsaw after his friend introduces him to Sherlock Holmes stories

he quickly realises that they're just books and nearly starves to death looking for actual cases until one evening a blackmailed officer of the Russian police offers him a hefty sum of money for dealing with a seemingly minor case of blackmail

intrigue leads the main character to explore the criminal underbelly of Warsaw canals in a quest for truth about the blackmailer's identity, then it gets a little religious

In a Germany that could have been, the kaiser arrives at a stalemate to end the first world war, and two young men strive for fame and glory in the international air races. After an economic crash tears their dream away, and one of them is sent to prison for a crime his father commited, they rebuild their lives in two ways. The prisoner finds God, and seeks the paths of wisdom and righteousness. The other falls in with gangsters and thieves and tries to resurrect their old dream. What ensues is the clash of two brothers, one fallen, one good, and the rise of Moloch, the king-god of Oppressors. The theme is the ascendancy of man, in the divine, and the temporal.

Also the air races are death races so it's gonna be fun.

Rough idea don't have it completely thought out yet.

>Setting: Near future setting where most labor is done by high advanced robots and the like, however only certain (extremely wealthy) communities are able to utilize them. Smaller places still need man power.

>first character is a very good man who comes from a very poor/small settlement. He's speared from the woman he intended to marry (not sure if he's drafted or possibly just picked for a merchant caravan or what yet)

>the trip he's on goes sideways and he ends up hundreds of miles from where he's from. He has to journey across lawless lands to eventully make his way home again. Along the way he ends up having to murder, lie, and steal just to stay alive.

>eventually he makes it to her (I'm thinking it'll be around a two year gap) and just as he's about to approach her but he realizes that he can't go back to her. He looks down to the bullet holes in his coat and the notches on his pistol's bore. He knows he's been changed too much by the land he's traveled and that she could never love a man with a pistol on his hip.

>so he leaves and enters the lawless lands once again.

>eventually the second character is introduced. A young man who is saved by the first character during an attack on his settlement.

>the two travel together, the first character finds it important to shield the second from the bad things he's had to do.

>eventually either A: the first character gets him to a very large settlement (one with robot workers) and drops him off there to be safe and leaves or B: the first character dies during their journey in a gun fight and the second character has to run off without him into the night and eventually makes it to the large settlement.

>from there focus on second character. Explore ideas/consequences of living in a community where no one has to work and most everything is at a person's finger tips.

>eventully though rumors of an internal power struggle emerge and fighting breaks out.

>the second character protects himself and his friends (I.E. The people who have lived in the settlement their whole life and are very sheltered) and by the end of the conflict they are the ones who emerge victorious.

>they celebrate but the second character, who's done the majority of the fighting for them, now feels tainted by the blood on his hands. Either A: sad ending where he just kinda lives with this intense feeling of alienation and knowledge that he's different from the rest of them. Or B: he leaves the settlement because he knows that he doesn't belong there anymore. He isn't "pure"

>talk a lot about the symbolism of the weapon someone uses. Use elements of Greek tragedy. Include Western motifs/aesthetic in a way. Talk about the relationship between prosperity and criminal activity Other stuff.

no. don't. you're obviously trying way too hard to fit with the /lit/ crowd by mimicking the russian writers this board loves to jerk off.
why would you write about something you don't know? with your limited experience, what could you possibly understand about the siberian identity that a russian hasn't already written about, or could write about better than you?

if you want to write an interesting, well-informed book, flip your idea around and write about a naive american (or whatever white-bread country you're from) teenager disillusioned with his country, perhaps a third or fourth generation russian immigrant, who runs away to russia in hopes of finding some form of identity in his "mother" land. but instead, all he finds is nihilism.

Taking a break from writing novels as I am not yet prepared for the devotion so I'm writing short stories. Now, I'm writing one about a man who hears a Regina Spektor song and believes that the lyrics are written about him; he is convinced that she followed him and was motivated by his inability to edit his writing, to write the song. He encounters her--or a woman who resembles her-- and emphatically asks what she meant in writing the part of the song that suggests she knows why he cannot edit. He is prevented from receiving an answer from the man she is with and as a result, he devotes himself to eradicating the man so that he would not be again disturbed upon asking her.

It's all for fun but I am not ashamed to admit that within me is the hope that it will someday be published, win the attention of Regina Spektor who would then naturally be obliged to offer me her hand.

My appreciation for her is not dependent on her musical ability but the aesthetic wonder of her form as woman. The music is incidental; it is the manifestation of beauty in the pallor, the physique, and--if you watch an interview or two--disposition. She is the idea, but that isn't to discredit her music. College student is writing a book, but never actually progressing past the beginning (repeatedly starts over at different moments in the story). The actual life of the student is written in a plain realist style and details his interactions with different students and teachers who each have their own peculiar, and universally poorly thought out, opinions on art and literature. The main conflict is between the narrator and a peer from a creative writing class who everyone derides without actually listening to what he has to say (none of his dialogue is written until the climax and instead you can only guess at what he says based on the mockery people inflict on him).

The story the student is writing is done with a changing style, but basically boils down to someone getting into a nasty anonymous argument with someone that devolved into stupid threats and then becoming paranoid that some of those ridiculous threats to them would be carried out.

Regina Spektor was chosen for the song which motivates his obsession; it has nothing to do with her. Her abandoning everything for me is only a potential byproduct of course.

You've made my day friend, but it has to remain Regina Spektor. The lyrics of the song are targeted to an individual who is able to write but not edit and that is the predicament that my man is stuck in, having devoted himself to writing but unable to get anything published because of his inability to edit. I suppose the same message can be derived from a fictional song if the lyrics are kept the same or slightly augmented but naturally, I would sooner have a handful read it if it meant that I can harbor the dream that it will come to fall in Her hands. I appreciate your input.

Well if you're a woman you need only set up a cam and abide by the demands of some debauched men to make easy money. I assume if you are not repulsed by the notion of writing erotica, then you are at least depraved enough to expose yourself to some men online.

>It's 1974, a junkie journalist in Sacramento, California finds a cat in an alleyway, and finds out his ex-girlfriend is fucking another man, which he obsesses over as he tries to quit smoking and does all sorts of drugs. His room-mate tries to rape him so he moves in with his friend, an artist. Throughout he is hired as a journalist to study the Nuclear Energy Reorganization Act of '74 for an eccentric born-again Christian millionaire.

I'm in too deep, lads.

I just want my book done at this point, hence "i'm in too deep." It's actually a realyl neatly written novel, but pretty boring, I guessl Most of it is just a junkie journalist having delusions of grandeur and lusting after his ex-girlfriend who had long since forgotten him.

The missionary work of a Byzantine priest in a Dobrudjan community composed of Slavs and Thraco-Romans sometime in the 10th century. The story would culminate with the Orthodox baptism of Bogdan(''Given by God''), child of the Slavic tribal leader's son and the daughter of his Thraco-Roman counterpart, thus symbolizing the beginning of the Romanian identity from both an ethnic(thracoslavic) and cultural(slavo-byzantine) perspective.

I hate how our intellectual elite grossly downplayed the role of the Slavs in the ethnogenesis of the Romanian nation and promoted their absurd Latinist propaganda in which Romanians are an ethnic 'Roman' nation descendant from italic colonists surrounded by a 'sea of slavs' and barbarians, separated from their 'western brothers'.

There's always someone who will relate to that sorta thing.

A NEET reflects on his first year after school, moving out of home and failing his way through university. His roommate spends her weekends at her boyfriend's house, so he develops a routine of taking her clothes and wearing them while he faps. One Friday night as he's sampling her clothes she unexpectedly comes home with her boyfriend. The NEET hides under the bed and cums buckets as they have sex above him.

In an individualist, social-liberal dystopia, the role of the humanities is only to argue the merits of the current state narrative. An entire class of second-rate philosophers devote themselves only to memorising the arguments and discourse surrounding the laws of the state.

In addition the population growth has declined rapidly and the state selects couples to reproduce. One such second-rate philosopher, now a government worker, must convince a couple of their duty to something greater than themselves.

he's not really a sad junkie, just a bit of a reflective guy. Here, I'll post a little bit. Should I post:

1) Him waking up at the beginning of the book
2) The Journalist learning about what he did when he was drunk the night before
3) The protagonist lamenting change and going into a state of existential dread because a store he once went to closed down

my novel is highly fictionalized, and I don't hide that at all. It's so filled with magical realism that anybody thinking it was supposed to represent reality would be an idiot.

One day a sheltered child discovers a path in his backyard which leads to a forest. The only maps of his town that he can find in the local library are outdated by years so he begins to explore and draw a map of the forest in the time between when he gets home from school and his parents get home from work. His efforts are frustrated as the forest seems to change everyday from what he draws on his map.

On his birthday his parents buy him an atlas and he throws out the old one he'd inherited after his grandmother's death. He's devastated to learn about the collapse of the Soviet Union in this way and how the new atlas seemingly willed into existence all these new countries. He takes his map and buries it in the forest.

In the future the human brain and its mechanisms of action have been completely discovered. A new form of media is in the "memory banks", where people can live memorise or experiences. Each Saturday night one memory bank serves a dirtily-dressed forty-something client who re-experiences memories of his girlfriend, before she dumped him after high school.

oh no
>>
>>7647412
I love the Romania of my ancestors, of martyrs and saints, of noble voivodes and courageous hajduks; not the bastardization of its history and culture that came from the Phanariote period onwards. First out of a somewhat justifiable political necessity and then from a developing westernist fetishism and the resulting complex of inferiority resulting from it, modern Romanians have a fabricated national culture. If we perceive authentic culture as that which is natural, shaped by the environment and the instinctual will of the community and not the result of an elite enforcing its views on the community for whatever reasons, then the culture of the Serbians, Bulgarians and Orthodox Albanians is closer to Romanian culture than the culture of modern Romanian society.
>>
>>7647439
Don't worry, the book doesn't start with him waking up, it starts with him talking about a sleazeball drug dealer. I just meant "beginning of the book" as in "after a night of hedonism somewhere near the start of the actual story"

James. Fenimore. Cooper.
>>
>>7647458
Yes. Literally. Here, I'll post it. This is in the "not edited yet" part of the book, so don't judge too hard.

"It was interesting, according to Rembrandt, seeing the city in a different light. In the daytime, it was not solely a different perspective, but seemingly a different world. Puddles that at one point had reflected the world above, like tiny black drips of space on the ground that had fallen all full of stars, had dissolved in the sunlight and left barren concrete where they once were. Alleyways that you wouldn’t dare even look down at 4am now looked friendly enough, brightly coloured graffiti welcoming you in to the fire-escapes and exit-doors and trash-cans and recycling bins and people talking and children playing. Passing by the campus we saw the store where I once had gotten my coffee exclusively. I stopped the car, pulled the paring brake, and ran out to greet the familiar shop-keeper, only to find a completely different fellow. A Pakistani man offered me some cigarettes, but I said no thank you and that I had quit, and I asked about the old polish man who had owned the place and who had worked the place every day as far as I could tell. Apparently he’d sold the shop and skipped town. Maybe something to do with the polish mafia, maybe not. He didn’t really know. I didn’t really want to guess, but it somehow made me deeply sad to think that things were changing so quickly.

Change is could be for the better, of course, but everybody places a certain value in nostalgia; and the changing, however small, of a place so holy as a corner store can have a multitude of effects of the psyche of an individual so caught up in vice and routine. A deep dread came over me, I thought of Celine, and I thought of how everything changed. A year before we’d have walked in to the shop together, poured ourselves coffees, bought some cigarettes, and spent the afternoon talking about movies like Breathless and The Four Hundred Blows, and all the wonderful French fashion that her aunt had brought back from her trip to Paris, and the great dope she’d just scored from that Asian guy who always hung-out round campus street-corners looking for students to hook; all young visionaries full of desire and delinquency and a destructive thirst for escapism. But all of that changed. It was probably for the best that I’d quit smoking, at any rate.
>>
>>7647478
this is pretty much an integral scene for the protagonist, because for the entire book he's been trying to convince himself that Celine, his ex, might still love him, and this is the first time that he's actually starting to realize things were starting to be different. I'm trying not to rip off Inherent Vice too much with the whole "the hippie dream is dying" thing.
>>
>>7647478
changes* sorry I broke my hand recently so I've been typing with one hand and on some heavy painkillers.
>>
>>7647484
I like it.
If I could give some advice, from "I didn't really want to guess" to "so caught up in vice and routine" seems unnecessarily explanatory.
I feel like "he didn't really know" going into "a deep dread came over me" would get your point across in a less matter-of-fact way. But there's a significant chance I dunno what I'm talking about.
>>
>>7647508
fair enough, man. I don't either. Like I said this book has been 75% written on heavy painkillers as I've been forced to quit smoking thanks to some operations I've got going on. I'm in the junkie mindset.

>what is American History X
But in all seriousness, when he is shanking the guy make sure that he is motivated by protection, not because of racism. Also just have him commit suicide at the school, and you will have something that maybe has been done only hundreds of times instead of thousands.
>>
>>7647554
I like this a lot, nice twist with the other robber. The one thing I would suggest expanding on is his motivation to commit suicide. His award and communal praise might serve to alleviate what would have otherwise motivated his suicide.
>>
>>7647554
Sounds kind of pointless, and not the good kind.
Maybe if you made the redemption bit the middle, and he spends the second half trying to tell people he's not good, and everyone just thinks he's modest. He was just trying to save himself.
From that point on, everyone starts taking moral agency away from him. He steals a car, drives it to the police station, and, since they know he's redeemed, they assume he just found it abandoned.
Goes in to hold up a bank, manager recognized him and takes him into back office to give him a personal loan to get him back on his feet, for publicities sake, never gets a chance to pull the gun.
Rapes a woman. She's seen him on tv, and had been fantasizing.
A few more incidents.

He just wanted to get back into jail, but people keep thinking he's good when he knows he's bad. That's what motivates his suicide.

Two black men attempt to find authenticity, one in becoming the essence of whiteness and the other in the essence of blackness. As they get more and more extreme in either direction, they fall out with one another. Both of them find what they are looking for in a way, but it's incomplete, and they realize their old friend was on the right track in some ways, and they need to seek him out to attain harmony. After a series of misadventures symbolizing the perilous descent from the peak of enlightenment, which threatens simply to plunge them back into mediocre moderation rather than surmounting the extreme insight they have reached, they meet at a point symbolic of the synthesis of their two halves. Then they suck each other's dicks.

I feel like I can bring a unique perspective to it. I'm the son of a mixed race Zimbabwean woman and my father was a white Rhodesian. So I've grown up hearing the perspective of both sides of the country. Honestly it wasn't just the white farmers who lost when Mugabe won that power struggle. Think about all the people who fought and died only for a monster, who was worse then the British or the Rhodesians ever were, to gain power.

Then he discovers himself like a character tied in a fiction and encounters his author, whom after a lot of misunderstandings he asks him to change the mistakes of his life, restructuring his story. But the more he changes it the more reality and fiction become weird, and strange things start to appear in his world as well because the story being told is turning in a new story.
