Fatherland is the better althistory world:
>German hegemony is limited to Europe.
>Nazis and America are in a cold war like scenario but are trying to reach a detente.
>Japan was defeated by the US and Asia, instead of Europe like in our OTL, is under American hegemony.
>Soviets exist as a failed state beyond the Urals and are in a permanent guerrilla war against the Nazis at the border.
>Britian collapsed to a fascist coup/vote after the war like some Eastern European states and nearly some Western ones in OTL.
>Queen Elizabeth and Churchill flee to Canada where only the US and her allies, Canada, New Zealand and Australia recognise them as the true British leaders.

My personal favourite althistory novel is "The Alteration:"
>The War of the Roses ends in a Papal Crusade called the "English War of Succession," ensuring CTholic control over England.
>The Protestant Reformation doesn't take place as Martin Luther is reconciled to the Roman Catholic Church and later becomes Pope Germanian I.
>While the Papacy holds hegemony over Western Europe, in this world, Protestantism is limited to the breakaway "Republic of New England." This Protestant state also practises apartheid towards Native Americans and a harsh penal system.
>England dominates the British Isles, for example, Ireland is called "West England".
>Instead of a democracy, the English Isles are administered by a Convocation of clergy accountable to the Catholic hierarchy. The rule of the Church is absolute and totalitarian, controlled by the Holy Office, a sort of secret police.
>Germany is a nation-state, known as Almaigne and ruled by an Emperor.
>The Greek Orthodox Church is ruled by the "Vicar General" of the "Emperor Patriarch" and survives as a separate ecclesiastical jurisdiction exiled from Greece (which is still under Ottoman domination) and with its headquarters in Crete.
>Viceroys rule India, Brazil and the Americas.
>A Christian-Muslim cold war exists between the Papacy and the Ottoman Empire.
It's a bit far fetched but it's fun as fuck.

have another OP: The Difference Engine

>In 1824, Charles Babbage succeeds in creating his Difference Engine and went on to develop the Analytical Engine. By the mid 1800s, the computers are mass-produced and other steam-powered technologies have also developed, turning the British Empire into a global hegemon more powerful than the one from our timeline.
>Britain forcefully opens Japan to Western trade due to the US becoming fragmented.
>Successor states to the US includes: a rump United States, the Confederate States of America, the Republic of Texas, the Republic of California, a Marxist Manhattan, British North America (an enlarged Canada); Russian Alaska and various Native lands.
>Napoleon III's French Empire occupies Mexico.
>Germany remains fragmented

The USA successfully implements the Slattery Report that establishes a provision of land in Alaska for the temporary settlement of European refugee Jews. As a result, two million Jews are murdered in the Holocaust, instead of the six million in reality.
>As a result, Sitka, Alaska becomes a major city in America.
>Sitka's status as a Federal District has been granted for only 60 years and a recently elected evangelical Christian President is promising to go through with the 'Reversion' of Sitka.
>In the novel, the State of Israel is founded in 1948, but is destroyed in the Arab-Israeli War.
>Without Israel, Palestine is described as a mosaic of contending religious groups and is in permanent conflict between it's inhabitants.
>Germany crushes the Soviet Union in 1942 and WWII continues on until 1946, when atomic bombs are dropped on major German cities. >There exists a Polish Free State, 'Third Russian Republic' and an independent Manchuria that has its own space program.
>President John F. Kennedy was not assassinated and married Marilyn Monroe and involved himself in a costly "Cuban War."

Yes. They are mostly centrists, but the majority are center-right. They are also pro-capitalist. THe far-left communities are constantly brigaded by liberals, and they are a clea minority aswell.
>Left-wing economic ideals are usually paired with lib values
Liberalism is the ideology of capitalism. both center-right and center-left are liberals.

>>

>>
Is it just me or is /lit/ really political tonight?
>>
>>7644095
I think it's that Marx thread. It's got everyone in a mood.
>>
>>7644095
Considering the book that kind of makes sense. I also, assume /lit/ and /pol/ have an overlap as many are interested in both.
>>
>>7644091
what does "socially" left even mean? if you conservative or permissive, then i would say they are more permissive. but this permissiveness only strengthens the grip of capital as subgroups to market to proliferate
>>
>>7644090
Reddit is liberal in some areas and conservative in others. They're stance against cussing and using slurs probably makes them seem even farther left than they actually are.
>>
>>7644091
I do not se the purpose of comparing /lit/, since my argument was only directed at the claim that reddit is VERY left-wing.
Also, i ca not be sure about /lit/. A while back it seemed we were good marxists, but now im not sure. /lit/ got brigaded by /pol/ for a while and it seems that some of them stayed here.
>>
>>7644104

>>
>>7644109

>>7644107
>>7644111

>>
>>7644099
That Marx thread is exactly what i mean by >>7644107

They were always bait threads, but atleast there was discussion about marxism and not the disgusting /pol/ memes we get now.
>>
>>7644117
That's what I was thinking of as well. They want people to be respected properly but not to an authoritarian extent. Compared to /pol/ they are left but are probably in the middle compared to most.
>>
>>7644117
They've recently been drifting to a more conservative stance. However, the deleting of r/fatpeoplehate and r/coontown just shows that they care more about safe spaces than free speech.
>>
>>7644120
Im saying that we do not have a good mix anymore, since /pol/ opinions reign supreme now.
And there is no discussion apart from "muh feels xd"
>>
>>7644123
The mods are definetly left of the users, that i agree.
>>
>>7644122
The problem with reddit is that it's massive. /lit/ is much smaller than many of the subreddits there. There is no singular reddit entity; they have their communists, their conservatives, and their SJWs, and the respective populations those groups are probably much larger than all of /lit/.
>>
>>7644126
I go to /pol/ and even I think many threads devolve into political baiting. The one about White hetero authors is a good example. Also, when Crippled America is brought up noone talks about the book but just shite flings back and forth.
>>
>>7644131
But if you took the avarage then he would be a middle-right "realist" agnostic pro-capitalist gamer.
>>
>>7644126
this isn't remotely true
we just openly discuss problems with (ideally) references to texts
this may make some opinions seem untimely
>>
Last one: "The Iron Dream" is a pretty short but fun one.

>Adolf Hitler emigrates to the US in 1919 and becomes a science fiction illustrator.
>Before his death he writes the science fantasy novel "Lord of the Swastika."
>Without Hitler's leadership, the NSDAP falls apart in 1923 and the KPD cause a Marxist coup in 1930.
>There is reference to a "Greater Soviet Union" which destoryes the British Empire and whose influence is growing in South America.
>Japan has retained its militaristic nationalism while the US atrmepts to limit the Greater Soviet Union's expansion.
>Due to the communist threat, the USA and Japan have moved towards a closer military and strategic alliance.
>Japanese bushido values are admired in the US. >There is also a casual mention of the fact it is the Soviets who have undertaken the systematic genocide of Judaism in Europe driving European Jews into extinction.
>>
>>7644126
Well, complaining about people turning away from your ideology is kinda dumb. /lit/ doesn't belong to any ideology, so if it leans this way or that, complaint isn't really an option. Marx is a philosopher who should be discussed, but you can't complain that more disagree with him. That thread was actually pretty good. OP was a fag, but the replies, both critical and not, were good.
>>
>>7644135
Honest question, why do you go to /pol/? Do you agree with them? Since i can see no other reason for it. That place is the pure form of what i hate about the internet.
>>
>>7644136
I would disagree with that. More like centrist liberal agnostic-atheist gamer. Pro-capitalist by European standards, but left by American ones. Reddit as a whole isn't the smartest. Not saying we are, but... they are pretty shit.
>>
>>7644143
I agree with Trump to an extent. Many of the people voting for him/ on /pol/ are retarded but they agree with the right things for bad reasons. Example: tight immigration. Yes, because when immigrating you should respect the laws. Many of them just don't like Mexicans.
Tl;dr - imho they are right for the wrong reasons and I also like to discuss politics.

What do you find so frustrating and sad about it? Genuinely curious.
>>
>>7644168
It depends on the thread Tbh. Half of it is /b/ shite and half is genuinely political.

The two major far-left(r/socialism and r/anarchism subs have about a shared 70000 people. Idk how many visit /lit/.

Free market is not capitalism. All major world powers are protectionist, but are still capitalist.
>>
>>7644184
Isn't Hong Kong free market?
>>
>>7644181
Just counted, 124094 subs across socialism, anarchism, and communism. Idk how many people /lit/ has, but it's not 100000 visitors. Idk. That seems ludicrous.

I just find far-right ideology dusgusting and the majority of the posters there base their ideology on the same "muh feels" tht they so hate about leftists(and i do too), exept their "muh feels" are just ones of pride and hate.
>>
>>7644194
Some of those subs could be trolls and shills though. I admit that is quite a large number though.
>>
>>7644194
YOu are counting them all together, but most of them subscribe to many of them. Almost all far-left are subscribed to r/socialism for example.
>>
>>7644197
I think that the trolls and shills would be outweighed by the non-subbed left-wing population of reddit. Keep in mind that there may definitely be overlaps between the three subreddits, so it's like much less. I just added the # of subs on a calc.

I exactly understand this sentiment. It can be jarring how hypocritical they can be at times. They're happy to doxx then get mad when someone they agree with gets doxxed. They were mad when a liberal doxxed girls who made a slur out of the arrangement of their shirts. It can be a good place to talk politics though. Ironically, Aussie threads have good political discussion.

>I just find the far-right ideology disgusting
Yeah, I wouldn't expect you to feel at home there. Although there aren't actually that many extreme-right people there (I'd estimate a tiny part of the board are actual fascists or Nazis), there is definitely a sentiment about preserving race and the importance of the white male. And you're right, many posters there are only concerned about "muh feels", but every board has its crap. /pol/ is pretty shitty at times, butI enjoy it. Filters help (although I don't use them) to get rid of the edgy 12-year-olds. It gets raided often, and a LOT of people troll, but it's hard to tell them from the serious ones, making the Nazi and fascist populations seem larger. The anti-Semitism is also prevalent, but again, there's a fine line between satire and being serious on there. It's shit by virtue of being popular, but I also love the hate it gets and the triggering causes. Sorry for the rambly post.

The funny part is that it gets literal shilling from companies. I wonder how much shills + liberal voters I've shrugged off as bait?
>>

/pol/ is much larger than /lit/. It's hard to call a board hypocritical for this reason:
Someone hypothetically makes a thread about fucking with an innocent leftie. People who are interested in fucking with an innocent leftie will reply and do things in the thread (this won't actually happen, it'll get deleted; but let's pretend). People who aren't interested, or think it's bad, won't reply; they either don't care or don't want to get flamed.
Someone makes a thread about an innocent rightie getting fucked with. People who are pissed about that will get in there and post, and people who don't give a shit won't. People will tend to flock to these threads more.
These groups of visitors don't necessarily overlap. That's why it can seem retarded if the situatio you described came up. /lit/ is a much smaller board; the same people tend to post everywhere.

/leftypol/ actually exists. It's amusing to see their attempted generals get swamped with memes. Same with Bernie generals. There are just too many people on there to expect a nice (relatively) board like this. And yes, a shit ton of people and groups shill there. Even the JIDF (hilariously a real thing).
>>
>>7644216
That makes sense. There are probably a couple who are hypocritical but they are not the majority.

OP is long gone... this thread went off the rails HARD.

>>7644244
There's both essential right/ left wing charts that would do good well though. As far as books that cover politics.
