Gardner's Art Through the Ages is the bible of art history.

It's definitely not the best, but in terms of enjoyement I recommend Umberto Eco's "History of Beauty" and "On Ugliness"

Story of Art is the best for history, but I recommend Batista's book "On Painting" as an extension. Its a really short read ands probably more like those Eco books, but its good to see what people were trying to do with art in the 15th century
