Cut your nails and use post-it notes like everybody else.

Highlighting is for fucking children who can't just read a book and digest it.

>IF I HIGHLIGHT THIS, I'LL KNOW IT'S A CRITICAL SENTENCE! AND THIS ONE.. AND THIS ONE.. AND THIS ONE.. WAIT, I'D BETTER START UNDERLINING EVERY NOUN SO I DON'T FORGET WHAT A NOUN IS. HOLY SHIT THIS PARAGRAPH BEGINS WITH A DECLARATIVE SENTENCE! WE'RE GONNA NEED SOME BIG SHADED ARROWS FOR THIS ONE!

It is not. God save the Queen.

I've been taking notes while reading Mason and Dixon, mostly just writing out word definitions I don't know or meanings for unusual archaic phrasing. Occasionally I write notes on who a character is so I remember it easier later. I think the act of physically writing the information down helps me remember it significantly better than just reading and moving on.

I also managed to spill coffee on the first physical book I've read in years but it was only enough to lightly stain one page.

Why

>>7621624
I had just visited a friend in Philadelphia and after visiting a few historical sites became interested in the location around the time the novel takes place. Also I had previously read several other books by Pynchon and enjoyed them.

What about reading in the bathtub? It's a practice show in several movies, but it just seems plain unwise. Has anyone here tried it?

I can't figure out how to make notes.

I go back and forth between nearly summarizing every part of the book to writing one line from like a chapter.

I just can't get in between
>>

I dog ear blaspheme my books...mostly because I'm too lazy to annotate properly. But I have a system where the page and direction of the dog ear points to the passage and the length of the ear (relatively speaking) determines how far down the page the passage I want is. Of course if the passage is too far down page (about half) the ear will point up from the bottom corner in the same fashion.
>>
I never write notes in books, but I must admit there is something very pleasing about seeing a book filled with notes and annotations. It's just really neat and satisfying seeing a lot of personal notes, written for whatever reason, stuffed along the margins of the pages.

people who take notes when they read usually plan to write about what they read, for grades or publication. often while reading you have insights that you may not be able to replicate when going through again, and even if you can recall your observations, you may not be able to remember the textual evidence to support them. so you take notes in the margins and underline the relevant passages to "build a case" so to speak.

Imprudent marriages, p.95, mid
"godless little dogs" p.39, top

but really the most important thing is to read the books three or four times. The best thing you can do for any essay is to pick a 100-page book and read it eight or nine times.

Nah, don't do this. Read it only three or four times, but first read all the selected letters, essays, short stories, earlier novels, etc. that you can find. Some authors are really transparent if you already know their prose work.

I mainly read within groups so I tend to highlight or annotate things that grow in the discussion, if its more complicated I also highlight for myself important anchoring points to focus myself by.

its also nice later on when you re read to sort of discuss with yourself or see what changed in the understanding of the text from the last time you read it.

if I need to write about some book, I also tend to be more annotative by the question that I guide myself by.
