So I just finished Childhood's End. What is /lit/'s opinion on it? Personally, I can see why Clarke is considered one of the sci-fi greats.

it's good

avoid the syfy miniseries for your own sanity

It's a prophecy.

I had actually considered watching it. Thanks for the warning. What went wrong?

scandinavian UN dude gets replaced by american farm boy because marketing. farm boy-karellen relationships get dictated by farm boy's love life/interests.

second episode made up plot that wasn't in the book just to expand on farm boy love life.

last part was pretty boring/shitty depiction of transcendent extraterrestrial existence + humanity's evolution. cut out the part with rodricks exploring overlord planet.

meh, better than his other stuff but as literature not all that goood, as sci-fi it fares better, loved the ending scene, that was top-notchly writen

Yeah I was afraid they would pull that bullshit. Really, I don't think that this is a book that can justly be adapted.

Indeed. Loved his descriptions of the visions and future earth, and the overlord home world.

I love Clarke, and have read more of his stuff any any of the other lit-sci-fi authors. Childhoods end is probably my favorite but I also loved reading city in the stars.

Not as heavy with the introspection on humanity and existence etc. But was very pleasant to read. It's very accessible to my friends so I rec'd it and after they finished we would talk about which civilization we would choose to live in
