I really liked Fury & Shalimar The Clown by Salman Rushdie. Should I absolutely read his other books too (in particular the infamous The Satanic Verses)??

Rushdie is fantastic but unfortunately he also happens to be alive and relatively popular so don't expect any sort of positive reactions towards him on here.
The Satanic Verses was great imo and i look forward to reading Midnight's Children

I read a collection of his short stories called East, West, and I was pretty impressed... There were a couple of really good ones in there (one about the auction of the ruby slippers from Wizard of Oz, and one about a guy who steals a strand of Mohammed's hair)

DFW and Pynchon are definitely juvenile. Gaddis is good though, can't speak for gass or mcelroy, but DFW is genre tier writing, and Pynchon is a shitposter. The thing about DFW was that he was so damn simple, no matter how many words he dragged from the OED, he still couldnt order them in a way that was mentally challenging. Pynchon just revels in his humor, though he is a genius.
His non-fiction's great.

Finished Satanic Verses last week - it was my first experience with Rushdie. Slow to start but started to pick up after the first couple of chapters. Really enjoyed by the end of the day - took unexpected turns and had some really good writing.

excluding his personal politics - most of his work was fantastic. One of my hometown favorites. I'm gonna have to lean towards Cat's Cradle but Blue Monday was pretty good too - also short stories.

When Pynchon is making juvenile jokes and corny songs it's a hell of a lot different than when DFW is pouting about killing himself or sperging out in envy of how he isn't on Pynchon's level. His work definitely isn't for everyone but to claim he is as one note as Wallace shows you haven't read anything other than V or GR. Just a few pages of M&D shows more emotional and artistic maturity than the majority of authors posted on this board, DFW included.
Anyways, can anyone recommend after i finish Midnight's Children what Rushdie book should i pick up next?
