Why the fuck does this have to be one sentence long

I don't have any specific themes or motifs in particular, I just want people to be comforted by my prose style and I want the words to play off one another gracefully.

I want people to be completely and totally engulfed in the atmosphere I present and I want people to truly envision the image I paint and I want them to stop rushing through and appreciate the image

I want the work to be fluent and not painful to read like Joyce, I want people to be genuinely interested.

People don't change. You can try to change, and you can pretend to be the person you wanted to change into, and in effect you will be no different than if you had changed, except that it will require constant unceasing effort on your behalf to maintain your pretensions, and the slightest lapse will send you sliding immediately back to who you were before. Someone who is "naturally" that person maintains their behaviour without effort - someone who changes into that person will never do anything more than pretend, and the pretension will be constant and demanding.

It's why anti-suicide activists kill themselves out of the blue 30 years after they "beat" it. They never beat it. It was hounding them for the entire time, and all they ever did was pretend. It's why fat people who lose weight get fat again. It's why criminals reoffend despite their best intentions. Plus, you have so little control over your upbringing that you have practically zero input into what your "natural" state is going to be. You might as well be born that way for all you can change it. In this sense, some people are simply born to be miserable. Some people are born broken and they will never be mended.

This is why the "utopian" ideologies fail. People will never be more than who they were born to be.
>>
>>7619112

Nah. People are constantly changing. It's just your brain fucking with you, being the little greedy shit it is, it's trying to make you mathematically calculate your life so you can derive some solid result from it. And whether you win or lose, the result will be a lot more secure than not knowing. Because that's what's really scaring you; or would you not be an evil man, provided you couldn't be a good one, so long as you weren't a nobody? You would always choose hell and heaven existing, so long as you knew there was something after death. And you would choose to suffer, and not be happy, provided "you" still existed.

The truth is that you don't know. Someone who's trying to abstain could last a couple days, some months, a few years, the rest of his life, or he could get rolled over by a car the next morning. That they managed to abstain for the rest of their life, or couldn't, or didn't even begin, it doesn't matter; neither is evidence for what will happen in all cases.

Someone who killed themself after 30 years... From your own point of view how can you say it wasn't in his nature to commit suicide 30 years later? How do you know it wasn't their "struggle" that really pushed them, that they wouldn't have committed suicide if they had not tried to fight it, or if they had tried once and failed? How can you say they "lost", if they survived 30 years? Why should it be deppressing that they did, or their nature at fault? Who's to say they wouldn't have suffered more, had they lived? Do you feel the same about cancer patients, for example?

All this jibber-jabber about real and fake is so petty, if you ask me. People are capable of living through so many things, losing their memory, their family, their bodies, their country, their home, and so on, and they do this all the time. Don't fool yourself, you are dying; we all are. Whatever praises or moral high ground you get will not give you the time lost back, because they are all imagined. It does not make it "all worth it". Get your mind out of your ass. Stop measuring yourself, then feeling elated when you turn out better than others, or sad when you wish you were as others, like somehow the measuring hadn't happened and that was reality. Forget reality. Forget whatever idea you have of yourself. Forget about degrees. Look at death in the face every morning. If you want something out of your life, if you really want it out, take it out completely.

You won't be saved. You won't win. So long as you live it won't end. No buts.

Fantastic reply anon. I understand what you mean. Especially the bit about giving up the desire to measure oneself against the world. Also I like what you said about facing death and proceeding from there.

Have you read The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker?

Have you got any literature recommendations for the points up have propounded?

I'm ashamed to say I can't recommend much because I'm not a very avid reader, and often do with whatever bits of information flow my way; however I can tell you Taoism though in particular has influenced me (I'm also >>7604538), and these days I've found myself coming back to the Tao Te Ching and what little has survived of Yang Zhu in the Liezi (more on that in a bit).

As for Becker's book, I haven't read it, but reading a summary, I can see why you brought it up and say that I've had similar understandings; people not only reproduce biologically, but also ideologically, and artificial selection (if you would) is just as in play as natural selection. Just think of all the rewriting a book goes through, for example, it's simply a process of selection by which the author attempts to make their ideas better received (i.e. reproduced more, both in physical and mental copies). All this is of course the logical conclusion of biological reproduction, to generate something that will survive it. However, I'm not it's the case that we are denying death; rather, it might be that death exists so life can propagate, but I'm getting long winded and I'm about to try to be a prophet.

Back to recommendations, Yang Zhu's Garden of Pleasure was posted here on /lit/ a while back, and it's been ringing true with me these days and it's short enough that can be reread easily: http://sacred-texts.com/tao/ycgp/index.htmhttp://sacred-texts.com/tao/ycgp/index.htm

From the first chapter:
>THE VANITY OF FAME
>YANG CHU, when travelling in Lu, put up at Meng Sun Yang's.
>Meng asked him: "A man can never be more than a man; why do people still trouble themselves about fame?"
>Yang Chu answered: "If they do so their object is to become rich."
>Meng: "But when they have become rich, why do they not stop?"
>Yang Chu said: "They aim at getting honours."
>Meng: "Why then do they not stop when they have got them?"
>Yang Chu: "On account of their death."
>Meng: "But what can they desire still after their death?"
>Yang Chu: "They think of their posterity."
>Meng: "How can their fame be available to their posterity?"
>Yang Chu: "For fame's sake they endure all kinds of bodily hardship and mental pain. They dispose of their glory for the benefit of their clan, and even their fellow-citizens profit by it. How much more so do their descendants! Howbeit it becomes those desirous of real fame to be disinterested, and disisterestedness means poverty; and likewise they must be unostentatious, and this is equivalent to humble condition."
>How then can fame be disregarded, and how can fame come of itself?
>The ignorant, while seeking to maintain fame, sacrifice reality. By doing so they will have to regret that nothing can rescue them from danger and death, and not only learn to know the difference between ease and pleasure and sorrow and grief.

In would like people to be more aware of exactly what the rapid progress in media technology using the internet as a distribution platform will do to society; people need to understand that it will lead to a complete breakdown of physical interaction and real conversation, especially at the point where virtual reality is perfected, and people also need to realise the short-term affects of instant a gratification media on (particularly) children, and the developmental and psychological problems this will cause for the younger generations.

It is probably my projection that you mean live well, or something.

That is wrong, being alone kills you, and a man unable to die and still always alone would be a horror story.

I don't mean live well at all.

There's no reason for life, there's no reason to achieve or elevate. Since the beginning of time, every existing being has sought only to produce a legacy to outlast himself because it is daunting to have wasted existence on one lifetime. Life is meaningless other than to exist. It's why everything procreates. God was created as the ultimate because he is and always will be. God is the human ambition, the foreverthing. If man would not die, if he knew of his eternal existence, there would be no strive, there would be nothing. It's completely unattainable but it's the ultimate state of being.
