Avsey's translation is god tier. This example, a song in the book, will prove to you why P&V is, though accurate, far too robotic:

>The song is about a series of men who come courting the singers, and their reasons for accepting or rejecting their advances. The gypsy, for example, is a no-go because “He’ll turn out to be a thief / And that, I’m sure, will bring me grief.” The businessman does better: “To the wealthy merchant I’ll be wed / And a queen I’ll lie, all day in bed.” The unfinished couplet is about a soldier. The original Russian doesn’t give a translator much to go on: Google Translate renders it “Soldiers will pack carry / And I for him . . . ”

>P & V make a decent attempt, managing to work in a mild profanity:

>The soldier boy will pack his kit
>And drag me with him through . . .

>But we must concede the superiority of the Avsey version, which, unlike P & V’s, makes me laugh:

>The soldier will march to seek his luck
>And leave me dying for a . . .

Not OP, but Gass' The Tunnel has never been made into an ebook version.

I have scanned the entire book and I have it on my PC
>Jesus fucking Christ those limericks
but because of my shitty printer/scanner I could only scan one page at a time so I've got a bunch of loose PDF pages in a folder right now. If anyone links a decent PDF merging program, I'll upload the first electronical PDF of William H. Gass' The Tunnel in this thread right here tomorrow (I have to get up at 6AM tomorrow, STFU).

Something bugs me about how poorly that P&V translation scans. At least they knew to imply a naughty rhyme there, but I just don't find them impressive at all.

Speaking of implying a dirty rhyme for that song, I think MacAndrew has everyone beat for all time:
>Soldier will be rough and blunt
>Always chasing after –––––.

(Also on the subject of profanity and Russian translation:
>The Times Literary Supplement published a short, curious article pointing out that [Anthony] Briggs [in his translation of War and Peace] had, unlike some of his predecessors, rendered all Tolstoy’s French into English and even spelled out some of General Kutuzov’s obscenities. (Tolstoy had obscured the profanity with ellipses.) What Rosemary Edmonds, the last translator of the novel, had as “It serves them right, the b—— b——s!” Briggs has as “They asked for it, the fucking bastards!”

MacAndrews and Avsey provide the intended reaction -- Both make you laugh, though in my opinion Avsey is more clever. P&V's is clearly inferior to both though.
>>
>>7582834
i think what.cd used to have an invite thread in its power user forum. bibliotik will be closed to invites for awhile since they just changed hosts etc.

in my experience, it is far better than any other site for retail quality literature in english. other languages i don't know and i think that for academic texts, other sites are probably (though not 100% better)

Jesus Christ, I've posted this link so many times.

It's amazing how people on the internet are so incapable.

How does getting an error on a link constitute being 'incapable'? Bit hostile for no reason.
Thanks for the other link I guess, although it's one of those 'let's act like this is a physical copy and only let one person at a time "check it out" ' links.

It's still undergoing maintenance.
What we know about the downtime:
>Apparently it got mitigated but still doesn't seem to be coming back (even if much more than a 'few days' have been passed)
>I remember reading somewhere that FL (and hence this thread's service) will be back when it comes back up

The history of the DDOS:
>Sometime about a month and a week ago: a DDOS started. Around this time private trackers went down like a stack of dominos (AHD, bibliotik, GGn). Around this time also libgen and scihub was shutdown. No one knows who started it (but I suspect Elsevier) and apparently christmas is the time for DDOSes. Bibliotik was down for the entire month and a week.
>Bib changed domains to bibliotik.me (versus .org), did some fiddling and came back online for about 18 hours. Anyone seeding was forced to change their tracker url to continue seeding/make books available. During this time this thread was created and a good proportion of torrents were revived once clients started reporting back in.
>Bibliotik went down again. Admins say that this isn't permanent. Nobody can download anything for this thread or upload anything or browse the site.

Where to get updates on when Bibliotik will be back/requests can be filled:
https://www.reddit.com/r/trackers/comments/3k8oiy/is_your_tracker_down_ask_here_instead_of_making_ahttps://what.cd/forums.php?page=4&action=viewthread&threadid=204454

It's easy as a fuck to get into bibliotik. What.cd PU (how I got in) or Animebyt.es elite (I've heard) will land you a spot when it's not dead.
>>
>>7605206
I'm slowly climbing man. At my current upload rate it'll be year before I make PU though.

>>7605199
goo gl/pJ9Rck

here you go, thank you for the smuggler's bible. wish there were an epub version, but this is great.
>>
>>7605209
Well it's down due to DDOS so you've plenty of time ;_; There's also a 6 month limit until you can get an invite from when you join up to what.cd

If you find it a bit difficult, AB I have heard (from /g/) has apparently some kind of non overdrive required path of getting into Bibliotik. AB is easier than what.cd because by the time you get to PU (as dictated by the specific time limits) the site gives you upload (about 70 GB from memory). This is 70% of the required upload. Furthermore, AB rewards uploads of basically everything. So a japanese light novel is about 2 GB from memory. Posting on the forum is 50 MB. So it's really easy to get to elite but very tedious because you need to upload 50 things (but this is so easy because a lot of buyfags on /a/ upload scans/transcoding music/artbooks and shit and AB is a new site with few uploaders unlike What.cd which is filled with annoying people).

But you can just wait for a What.cd freeleech or more staff picks and it will be much easier.
Other tips: just upload recent bandcamp stuff. In all formats. And make sure you use the 2010s tag.

People have also had luck filling music requests using soulseek and ignoring the ones with smaller rewards. Books too can be gigantic and 300 mb+ and What is very book bare. Music (non rulebreaking stuff) also gets removed all the time for being unseeded so you can be sure that those releases, especially ones that were obtained from other sites, can be uploaded again in the place. And don't forget the 'we will snatch unsnatched requests thread'. One guy said that manga got autosnatched.

Using my academic access to various databases and elibraries I also managed to fill about 40 GB worth of book requests. Using mobilism
>>
>>7605221
Thanks family.

I chose the what.cd route over AB because I don't really watch much anime. My local library has overdrive, so I'm not really concerned about that.

I've had some success transcoding FLACs. Most book requests seem to be filled by a bot really fast though.

If I have to wait 6 months anyway, then I'm not really in any hurry. I'll probably just try to take advantage of the next big freeleech.
>>
>>7605234
>Most book requests seem to be filled by a bot really fast though.
Yeah. By the way a lot of them I think were using bibliotik to fill requests but for smallish buffers if it gets uploaded a month later you should be able to pounce and get it. You might be able to beat them if it gets upped to kat.cr too if the timing is right. Mobilism/any academic access you can get your hands on/bookz for old stuff/dedrming the trials off amazon/kat.cr are your friends. But some people are not nice. There was one person I ripped a book for for 23 GB or something and they unfulfilled the request. The smaller ones people might not bother.

Account age limit was 6 months and I don't think this/class requirement I don't think will be changed because bib's membership is pretty damn small.

Also don't forget the free audible books you get. I think it's 2 for free now. You can (if I remember correctly) make infinite audible accounts or something with emails.

All the best of luck anyway.
