Why he still hasn't got Nobel Prize?
>>
How is Umberto Eco? Seems very interesting, I know he's a professor of semiotics which makes me think his writing would be quite good.
>>
because he's italian dan brown

this makes me think his writing would be quite bad

I've read his books after wathcing The Name of the Rose with Sean Connery. The movie impressed me but the book is better.
>>
>>7530331
It is reasonable to assume he unironically tipped that fedora at a m'donna at least once. that is enough to disqualify him
>>
>>7530359
This. Eco is genuinely patrician, and the Nobel Prize is pleb middlebrow shit.
>>
>>7530331
Because the Nobel Prize for Literature is a fucking joke, that's why.

Do you really think a bunch of geriatric no-name Swedish academics are suitable arbiters of the quality of anything?
>>
he doesn't pander

>>7530335
he describes himself as the midway between Borges and Joyce so there's that.
>>
>>7530489
maybe he should realise

Actually he's the Italian Mark Danielewski
>>
He's like if Borges were less imaginative and stretched his stories to novel-length

>>7530508
He's such a queef

He's intellectual Dan Brown, meaning he's mediocre, but has intellectual themes

Does anyone read any of six italian Nobel Laureats? Are they better then Eco?
>>
>>7530744
Pirandello is one of the great dramatists of the 20th century and Montale one of the great poets. Carducci and Quasimodo are also very highly regarded. Dario Fo is explicitly a political choice, and I suspect Deledda is a token female.
>>
>>7530744
>>7530761
Or in other words, yes, they're all better than Eco.

>Does anyone read any of six italian Nobel Laureats? Are they better then Eco?

It's hard to make a comparison because three are poets and one is a playwright. Fo had no reason to be there, Deledda I haven't read.
That said it depends if the nobel prize for literature is given on the basis of the novels or of general contributions to the culture. Because Eco is a great essayist, but I don't now if his novels alone are worthy of the prize.

>if the nobel prize for literature is given on the basis of the novels or of general contributions to the culture
There are at least two laureats who got Nobel for non-fiction.
>>
>>7530508
is house of leaves good?
>>
>>7530795
There are a few, but most of them are extremely political choices (Russell, Churchill, the most recent one)
>>
>>7530795
Well in that case Eco is certainly eligible. I honestly don't know much about the process though.
>>
>>7530335
>Semiotics
Didnt even know this; Ill have yo check him out.
>>
>>7530836
Virtually all his works are informed by that sort of language-meaning-interpretation mindfuckery.
>>
Numero Zero was pretty bad, but I liked Name of the Rose.
>>
>>7530900
>Numero Zero was pretty bad
Seems Umberto is tired
