Reading challenge of 2016.

How many books are you planning on reading this year?

Any books you're excited to get to?

I've decided to try and read at least 20 books this year, which is a big increase since the last year of 5 books.
>>
I have like a list of 25 novels and then about 10 philosophy books. Mixed in are some poetry and short stories. It all might be overly ambitious though.

51 books. One has to be the Phenomenology of Spirit,

I am going to die.
>>

Same as you, I read 5. Looking to read at least 10 this year (all /lit/ top 100 approved of course ;p).
>>

>Any books you're excited to get to?

not really. a commentary on plutarch's life of mark antony is the only thing that comes to mind. maybe i'll read 2666.
>>
>>7526931

I plan on reading 100 books this year, last year I read nearly 600, but I think I have to work this year.

How the fuck is that even possible, how many hours each day do you read?
>>

We are on the internet.
>>

probably doesn't subvocalize. that or he's a neet.
>>

I have a shitty tendency of starting books and never finishing them. If I dedicate myself to ten pages a day, do you reckon I could force on a habit of reading everyday?
>>
>>7526979
Yeah sure. If you really have a problem with it, then maybe try setting a reading time or something too.
>>
>>7526953
You can read like 3 YA books per day if you're a YA-eaboo and unemployed/studying, i've seen these people on goodreads

As for OP:
I tried to read 115 books 2015 but failed at 108, it took up the majority of my time and got unpleasant, too much forced reading. This year it'll be 80.
>>
>>7526953

sometimes >12hours a day
>>
>>7526953
It's Sebastian, he's a neet. Respect, though, most neets aren't nearly that productive.
>>
I plan to read 20. I read 18 last year so I figured I'd gradually improve my speed.

One of them will be Infinite Jest though.
>>
>>7527005
do you do anything with all that knowledge?
>>
Tried 150 this year. Only got to 90 something. Got to 120 something year before with some photography books padding it. Will try 150 again.
Though I'm probably going to be working full-time (if I can ever find a job ; ;) so I doubt I'll get there.
>>

Read 52 in 2015, i want to read at least 70 this year.

No, I just found out that reading is the best distraction for a boring life, so I read all day

I read 40 last year averaging around 28 pages per day. Half read a dozen or so books also.

20 books, most of my spare time will be occupied with exosome research. Planning to focus on Dostojevskij, philisophy in general, medieval literature and ancient greece/rome.
>>

only made it to 15

Probably going to put like 30 down this year.

I read 29 books in 2015

I really want to read more and there was a stretch of a few months early in the year where I hardly read anything, so in 2016 I am going to aim for 60 books.
>>
Last year did 70/52 this year will just aim for 52 again but read a doorstopper a month
>>
I read 40 in 2015. I will read probably about the same this year, maybe 50.
>>
Reached thirty one books last year so I'm setting that as my baseline and see if I can go over forty. I tend to read mostly during my work commute but I've decided that I'm also going to push myself to read more at home, especially if the book is 400+ pages long, just so that I don't end up stuck with it for a month or two.

I'm planning on getting through Homer's Odyssey as my holiday reading this year. Last year it was Milton's Paradise Lost & Regained. I find that reading epic poetry is easier when I put a strict time goal on myself.
>>
>tfw you can only appreciate <1% of human creative output in your life
>tfw the canon is really just a best guess
>>
I put my goal as 50, but I probably won't reach it since I read less than 10 this year.
>>
>>7526943
Where could I find this Top 100? I too wish to be included in the circle of /lit/-chic
>>
I hit 200 last year, going for 250 this year. I'm more interested in completing all of the work of some authors (Primo Levi, John Hawkes, Samuel Beckett, and maybe Joseph McElroy if I can grab a copy of Women and Men)
>>
Bad bitches don't read books
>>
75.

I'm excited for every book I'll be reading, or else I wouldn't read it.
>>
52
>>
52, considered 60 but I want to break out of my habit of reading 250-300 page books.
>>
>>7526931
52. one a week. maybe more, depending on school
>>
I'm really hoping to get like seventy in this year.
>>
>>7526931
50 Is a good number. 44 last year and I played a lot of video games.
>>

>>
>>7527287

You can have a page count goal instead if you like.
>>
Maybe I'll read 1 or 2. Depends if I find anything that resonates with me.

I'll aim for around 200-300

>>

40. Ideally I'd get to 52, but I'm still at my current job where I barely made it to 40 last year.
>>7527287
Using goodreads I always make sure that my books average over 300 pages in length. Anybody else do anything similar?
>>
>>7527782
I like 52. Set.

>tfw you love long non-fiction and you have to use shorter books to make up the difference
>>
39. It's a 50% increase over the 26 I read last year, and I don't actually count most of the books I read last year because they were either graphic novels or coffee table books.

Now that I'm sober I think I'll actually be able to read a book proper.
>>
I was going to do 6, then I changed it to 4, but now I'm thinking 3. I'd like to read a couple classics like Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, and Black Beauty.

It has been several years since I've read a book.
>>
>>7527667
How come? Do you want to focus on reading longer novels?
>>
I've been getting through between 40-60 the last few years, depending on how busy my life is. Because I get to listen to a lot of stuff at work it will probably be more like 100ish books this year. I normally have on okay mixture of novels to philosophy except for last year where I only got through 5 so I want to fix that.
>>
>>7526931

I'm going to read 1439 books this year. probably 50, like I did last year

I'm really excited to get to Russian stuff. This will be the year of the Russians and of re-reading stuff I haven't read in a year+.
>>
Anyone here counting online fan fictions as books?

I read like 5 books last year. I didn't really begin reading on my own until the fall, though.

I read 20 last year so this year I plan on 40.

I'm very excited about reading Don Quixote, Infinite Jest, Portrait of the artist as a young man, Ernest Shackleton's South (pairing this up with silent film documentaries like Epic of Everest, South and The Great white Silence), The Divine Comedy and Moby Dick.

I think this year will be pretty good. I'm starting it off with Lolita.
>>
>>7526979
Sure, anon. Plus, if you start trying at 10 pages a day, you could increase it gradually to 15-20 pages a day, and then even more.

Don't force yourself if it because tiring or a strain, anon. Take on a possible target you'd like to read this year and go at your own pace.

Hi Sebastian!

Do you write? Do you plan to? You must surely have some things to say after all you've read.
>>
>>7529126
I'm also trying to read 100 in 2016. Although, I only managed 30 last year, I didn't get serious until the last few months.

I already have a bookcase full of mostly unread books (much of /lit/core and some philosophy).
>>
>>7526931
5 books maybe, i have bought like 10 books but only read a few chapters until i get bored.
i get easlly distracted and to other stuff like play vidya instead

>Those people are not me. I have been in hospital for a while, so I have plenty of time to read. I am currently writing a neo-fascist manifesto.

Real Sebastian here:
haha, you would get jailed for something like this in Germany, but I have been entertaining the thought to write a book called something like "Bigot" with an antisocial fat welfare guy who walks around spouting /pol/ stuff to everyone he meets, it would be really harsh in terms of racism and if I go all out I would have a Fatwa against me, but maybe I can pull it off.
>>
I plan for an average of 1 book per week. But I haven't made a list yet.

My real objective for this year is to leave behind manchild books and start reading good literature. Last year I did some progress on that and I hope to continue.

i'm going to read 12 books, one per month. I might end up reading if i finish some of the books earlier. Last year i was on a good pace, but then discovered 4chan while reading Light in August, and only finished two more books after that. Read 8 books in total

My nigga, I plan on reading Portrait and Grapes of Wrath too. Dubliners really is something special, glad to hear you're enjoying it.

What's Donna Tartt like (if you've read her work before)? My mother likes her books but other than that, I don't really know what she's like.
>>
>>7531531
My experience with Donna Tartt is identical to what you said in your last line.
I was recommended The Secret History by a bookshop worker in London who saw some books that I was buying.
>>
I read 13 actual books, and 20 comic trades (mostly Swamp Thing, Sandman, some Berserk)
>>
>>7526931

I don't plan on reading a set amount.

Currently reading Shakespeare, as I got his collected works this Christmas. I've been enjoying it thoroughly. Finished Macbeth earlier today. So far I've read Hamlet, Othello, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Julius Caesar. Any recommendations/favourites one of you would care to pass along?

400.

Read 25 books in 2014. Wanted to read 40 in 2015 and only read 7. I don't belong here anymore...
>>
I read 38 in 2015, I was well on my way to my goal of 50 if I didn't have to spend the holidays working 2 jobs.

I'm going to shoot for 42 books this year.

Do you have any other 'challenges' that you try to complete?

I have a small list of additional challenges, because reading x number of books can be boring.
>>
I read two per day last year. I may do that again. I didn't set a goal until March last year.
>>
I read 29 books in 2015, but the goal was 50. I learned my lesson, I guess, so I'm aiming for 40 books this year
