What's /lit/'s problem with her?
>>
/lit/ is sexist and contrarian. They hate her because she is female and because she is popular.
>>
>>7518471
You may agree or disagree with her philosphical or political ideas but her prose is utter shit.

I've only read Atlas shrugged though.

Ayn Rand is one of the least feminist writers of all time. /lit/ likes to hate her because liking her is a meme, and lit pretends to hate anything that lots of people like.
>>
>>7518486
Not everything is about gender politics.
>>
>>7518720
why do people always post this when they like a shitty author?
>>
>>7518828
>why do people like things that I don't like?
>>
>>7518828
>Why do people like authors that I'm jealous of?

Beautiful
>>
>>7518596
>Atlas Shrugged
It's not a bad book, the story and characters are somewhat captivating and well developed, but her overuse of certain words is annoying to say the least.
>>
>>7518720
>>7518486
I always thought most people, even outside of /lit/, thought she was shit.

>Book is long as fuck.

They fucking do
>>
anyone got that gif where she gets interviewed and someone edited a gold bar that she follows with her eyes?
>>
Atlas Shrugged, likes Grapes of Wrath, is coming to take on new nuance in this age of the fragile millenial.

But her writing is extreme snoozefest shit. It reminds me of Scarlet Letter actually, the way she keeps pressing her point, is just like Hawthorne's "foreshadowing".
>>
>>7520400
I haven't read Atlas Shrugged, so maybe that's what you're referring to. But in The Fountainhead most of the philosophy was imbedded in her characters, which really extended her underlying message in a semi-subtle way, save for the extremely direct speech by Howard Roark at the end. In that respect, I'd have to disagree.
>>

>/lit/ likes to hate her because liking her is a meme

This board isn't a homogeneous entity you moron. Go get some fresh air.

I personally hate her because she was an emotionally calloused sociopath.
>>
>>7520421
But let's not kid ourselves it basically is
>>
>>7518471
Because edgy teens like her. Same with nihilism and Nietzsche.
>>
>>7520431
She's literally the opposite of edgy teen beliefs, she advocates hard work and a capitalist system where one should be financially and morally responsible
The opposite of leftist cuck edgy teens
>>
>>7518471
I don't have a problem with her, I like her
>>
>>7518471
She's a completely average novelist who's popular because her viewpoints align with a certain political affiliation. Her works are basically the equivalent of "what is to be done', by Chernyshevsky, except for the far right instead of communists. The only difference is that there's hardly any communists now so Chernyshevsky has been completely overshadowed, but there's a fair few 'libertarians', so her books are still talked about by a certain crowd, despite being entirely mediocre and preachy.
>>
>>7518471
It's simple minded philosophy that plays to the worst impulses of teen boys. Real world complexities can't be solved by the free market.

Watch how Silk Road went from total freedom to trusted sellers and buyers to we will kill you if you steal out money.

I remember a passage from Atlus Shrugged where the self insert is getting dicked and she looks up at a ceiling fan, which reminds her of all the great achievements of humankind.

I think at this point i recognised Rand to be a looney.
>>
I read the first chapter of Atlas Shrugged without knowing anything about her and her philosophy. It was okay, and though "lel I want to make money I rule the world xdxd", I thought I still might give it a chance, but then I watched an interview with her and read more about the book and quited it.
I read Anthem because of the "unconscious inspiration" it was for Rush's 2112, and tbqh I enjoyed it, it was pretty cool, the writing was meh, and the ending was somewhat uplifting, despite the cringe it gave me.
Not gonna waste more time on that witch, I have so many other books to read.
>>
Have you read Anthem? Read like an undergrad essay.
>>
>>7520376
Someone please deliver. I would very much like to see this!
>>

>>7520890
I had to read Anthem in school, my teacher was all over the Rand dick. She even assigned us to write an extra chapter which took place after the end. They were enjoying to their new lives, but little did they know the horror which lurked in this unknown world. Bears. They both got eaten. Teacher didn't like it.
>>
I don't hate her, she's just low brow.
>>
>>7518486
Except almost everyone hates her. The only people who like her are edgy teenagers and members of her weird cult. She is mostly despised by everyone outside of those camps. Saying that Rand hate is a meme is much closer to the truth than people liking her is a meme.

>>7518596
You may agree with her philosophy, but you would be wrong. There is not a single philosopher worth his salt that gives Objectivism anything. Walk into any post-grad uni setting and ask who agrees with Rand, the answer will be literally zero.
>>
>>7521802
>the majority opinion is the correct opinion

The same kids I knew in high school who wore fedoras and shit carried around both Atlas Shrugged and Thus Spoke Zarathustra

When you want to build a house you consult a builder, when you want an opinion on philosophy you check with philosophers.

>but there's a fair few 'libertarians', so her books are still talked about by a certain crowd, despite being entirely mediocre and preachy.
It's too bad Robert Anton Wilson had it right in Illuminatus Trilogy that Ayn Rand's brand of libertarianism isn't Freedom at all, but I can't imagine Paul supporters toting a giant scifi novel with dudes fucking giant apples when they can speak of the relatively tame shit Rand puts out

Shoulda been socialist bears

Socrates pls go
>>
>>7518471
She's a terrible author with a terrible writing style on the one hand, and a terrible philosopher who doesn't present any real cogent arguments in support of her positions.
>>
>>7521843
But Gorgias, what does it mean to pls go?
>>
>>7521856
Well Socrates, when I tell you to go it means your comments are not a good example and corrupting to the youths of the board. Shitposters must be driven from the city.
>>
>>7521843
That was a very unsocratic thing that >>7521835 just posted.

Socrates would have been ashamed of him.

>This thread

As to be expected of a bunch of bandwagoning Ayn Rand haters, nobody is actually making any good arguments against her here besides "Stupid rich woman justifying richness", "Neckbeards love her" and attacking her writing instead of the intrinsic philosphy to take away from the fact that you can't get anything between her philosophy.

Maybe some of you would do good to follow her advice and not resort to accusatins and scare tactics like a bunch of bitching feminists and listen to reason.

To be more clear, I'm talking about people attacking her personally by downplaying and demonizing her and her philosophy or the people that agree with them instead of forming any good arguments against it.

There's a lot of misconceptions about her philosophy and nobody wants to have a reasonable argument about her philosophy and just want to throw around ad hominems until the other person succumbs.
>>
>>7521879
Ayn Rand wasn't any where near rich, in Russia her family were middle class at best, when she emigrated to America she lived in poverty, It was only after the publication of The Fountainhead could she be described as any where near "wealthy".
>>
Fiction shouldn't just be pushing an ideology. I read Anthem and it was nothing more than that.
>>
Objectivism fails to establish a plausible epistemology or metaphysics, her political philosophy is an attack on communitarianism but leaves no alternatives to rely on, and she provides a 'philosophy of life' similar to what the Stoics provided: a lot of strictures with no 'sages' to speak of.

Even her aesthetics or philosophy of art in the Romantic Manifesto lacks a coherence. She seems to swing between William James and Hegel without ever referencing the works of either.
>>
>>7522662
Not that guy but adding that all her ethics relies on her belief that she has overcome the is/ought distinction. She hasn't so none of her ethics is grounded in anything.
>>
Rand said short fat losers try to slander and shame the strong and successful.

Lit is full of losers who don't even read and chimp out that rand is one of the best selling philosophers of all time.

????

Rand is right

Yes it is.
>>
>>7520431
Rand, nihilism and Nietzsche are only superficially similar philosophies. Rand posits an autistic objective morality, Nietzsche disregards the concept of objective truth, and nihilism states that morals are not a feature of reality.
>>
>>7521926
It's almost impossible to separate her philosophy from her cult of personality and argumentative style. So many of her arguments are just character assassination, there's not a whole lot to refute in the first place.
