well i guess it's better than the other cover. I kept thinking it was one of those airline magazines they have on the plane, only somehow it was more boring than glazing at discounted Swarovski knock-offs I'm never going to buy.

The clouds make so much sense once you're about halfway through the book though. The scene in which the cloud motif on some wallpaper is hashed out is one of the most rewarding parts of the novel, plus they remind one of the sky in Arizona and the way EWD makes use of the nation's airspace. Having the cover start to seem appropriate was a common experience for so many people reading Infinite Jest.

this. When Dave Eggers first reviewed he called it a try-hard effort and wasn't impressed by it, then in his forward he says there's not one lazy sentence in the whole book, which IJ fans will disagree with ("Get to the library and step on it."). Eggers is scum who wrote a forward just as a career move to get his name on the cover of IJ.
>>
>>7501445
also to absolve his sin of pointing out that infinite jest sucked, after it became a "national bestseller" his publisher gave him a chance to backpedal and fall in line, which he happily did, lil bitch

Joe Walsh! A designer who has worked in illustration, animation and film. He is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design and has worked in San Francisco, Cincinnati, and New York. He is currently working as a designer for Joe Walsh Design.

The winning artwork was selected by a committee including Wallace’s wife, the artist Karen Green, and his longtime editor and CEO of Hachette Book Group, Michael Pietsch. The new edition will publish on February 23, 2016 and will feature a new foreword by Tom Bissell.

Wow, a book about the social and cultural influence of the ubiquitous, all-powerful television! This novel will surely remain relevant and readable well into the twenty-first century.

This cover is something of a guilty pleasure for me, desu. The scrawny, and clip-artish style of the drawings gives sort of a humdrum, lethargic, "this is what life is nowadays" feel, and the different images get the scope of the novel across, sorta like the "Where's Waldo" Pynchon covers.

Postmodern. Any genre made after postmodernism is actually just a meme or a weird engineering of a group of words used in a desperate attempt at self-validation by pseudointellectuals.

Don't fall for it. Unemployed millenial art students with six figures of debt sit at home and frantically make up bullshit to hide the reality of their own lives from their stream of consciousness.

>>7507494
The answer is yes, but it very much depends on how you want to read IJ. I like taking notes, character maps, writing in the vocab, and easy flipping back to past chapters, so I need a physical copy.

If I just wanted to read it casually, the ereader might work better. The footnotes might also be a bit problematic, but I heard some digital copies have integrated footnotes or something like that.

I'd go with a physical copy for your first read, then consider digital.

>>7507429
The point that >>7507488 makes is almost right. IJ is definitely a post-modern piece of literature, but only just. From about 2000 onwards, postmodernism died and was replaced by whatever it is that we are now living in.

Postmodernism is a reactionary movement. It is primarily reacting to the social conditions of the West in the late 20th century. The rise of the internet, mobile phones, space travel, robots, etc. The rate of change was so rapid as to inspire some of the most convoluted, scientific and banal works of literature we have ever seen.

There's a lot of discussion concerning whether literature has moved out of its postmodern era. I think that we should ask instead whether the West has moved out of its swift technological revolution.

I don't think that we're out of that period just yet - there is still a lot that is just on the verge of being invented and becoming essential for human life, especially in terms of medicine. For further predictions on the future see Harari's "A Brief History of Humankind".

The fact of the matter is though that we will eventually move from these tempestuous conditions to something a lot calmer, and once that happens we can find a style to adapt our literature to.

This isn't speculation either. It all happened in the 19th century after the Industrial Revolution and it will happen again.
