I absolutely don't disagree with the notion that colonialism was a mistake, forcible civilization of a people that do not want, nor necessarily even had the capacity for such, solely based on the European mans own religiously unquestioning faith in the concept of liberalism, human rights and so-called "freedom" have irreversibly forced Africa into factionalism, unsustainable, fragile nationhood and opened it to exploitation not only by western, but also eastern forces.
Africa would not be a pinnacle of "achievement" without the meddling of westerners, but it would be more peaceful and I think africans themselves would be more happy. And there is nothing wrong with that, "achievement" and "civilization" are not in fact universal goods as far as I'm concerned, and if it does not resonate with the spirit of the peoples it is enforced upon it is cruel.

There were big empires but they were some Warhammer 40k hard theocracies without the wheel, sail or practical metallurgy (meaning metal was pretty much only used for jewelry).
