Is Metro 2033 any good? I've had it recommended by a few friends, but I'd like your opinions on it.

Okay. I might check it out.
It isn't great.
slightly better than your everyday shit

I like it. It's kinda reddit. It's a book one reads for the worldbuilding, not the prose or the characters.

Just skip it and play the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games instead.

you mean metro redux.
Really cool worldbuilding but that's it. Prose is a bit repetitive, characters are bland.

The Metro series is just S.T.A.L.K.E.R dumbed down for casuals and girls.
Even the writing (at least in SOC) is better in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

i loved both that one and 2034. it's cozy, easy reading

Metro is nothing like STALKER - it's got a similar tone. They shouldn't be compared. Both are excellent gsmes with shared developers.
Metro was designed, from the start, to be linear. STALKER was designed to be open-world.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R also just has better systems and design in general. There's nothing quite like that first playthrough where you end up crouching behind a tree stump for 20 minutes because your shitty half-broken AK has such ridiculous bullet spread that you can't hit anything at all beyond 5 meters distance, and then you get flanked, and when you try and escape it you run straight into a vortex anomaly and explode into a thousand gibs.
And to be fair, past Bar SOC at least gets pretty damn linear.
