It depends on your audience and characters IMO. Like, yeah, sure, famished sounds pretty weird in an average TV setup. Exquisite fits well if your character's a pretentious dipshit, and obviously the word parched doesn't belong in a toddler's story.
Books though? Ehhh, saying very serious in lieu of solemn talks down to your audience imo. Sure googling definitions breaks immersion, but most people with an IQ north of room temperature know what the word keen means.
Limiting yourself stylistically is fucking retarded. Every word has its places so long as you know what you're doing.
