Is it really necessary to read about Greek mythology before reading Greek philosophy? I read that one should start with, reading Mythology by Edith Hamilton, but I feel a little anxious having to get through 400 pages of mythology.

400 pages is nothing. It should only take you about a week. Just read it.

It reads so fast though. Just do it, I finished it in like a day.

Nah senpai. You think Dante read Edith Hamilton's mythology book? No, he read the great poets who told the stories the best. There are only like less than 10 greek and latin poets and less than 5 playwrights you need to read to understand references, and it's not like Socrates drops quotes from Homer and without explaining them. Furthermore, they are used more to develop arguments and clarify than being the whole point of them. Know what gods and goddesses are gods of or what the heroes like Hercules did? You're set then.

It's kind of useless info. More of a hobby.

Unless you're teaching it or something, isn't all literature a hobby?

I don't get it. Am I missing an obvious professional application of reading Greek classics?
