Kind of a snobby thing to say.

First time visiting this board and it seems to be 95% pseudo-intellectuals
>>7417738
Same here, and it does indeed seem to be the case
What's wrong with fiction?
>>7417751
I read in another thread something along the lines of
>everyone knows this place is just pretentious undergrads
Reading fiction is patrician. Reading fiction as philosophy is pleb. Thems the fax mate

Well, sadly OP's kind of provocative posting gets a response. The nice thing is that now and then it accidentally leads to some insightful discussion.

Bill doesn't act like he's smart. He's quite adamant about being a loud-mouthed idiot.

Anywhere "intellectuals" gather, this is the case. It's just worse online.
I am not an intellectual. I don't care about most of what's discussed on /lit/.
Reading fiction is at this point more like listening to an author whine about how reality isn't fair and either thinking he's nuts or cringing or both.
To gain understanding of the human condition through fiction is to learn existential despair. Not that that's the only way.
>>7417738
/lit/ is a great place to start out, but, yeah, any high-level conversation is rare at best.

>read fiction
>realize you've wasted your time and energy on things that didn't even happen
>read non-fiction
>become a more knowledgable person and have more skills and techniques to improve the world
>>7417936
>you've wasted your time
It's hardly been wasted if you enjoyed it
>>7417936
>hasn't read enough fiction to realize the world can't be improved
>>7417945
>hasn't realized scifi writing is only dystopian because masses don't want to read something without conflict.
That or the author is pessimistic. It's always one of those two.
>>7417978
This. Fiction can ONLY ever be written with a pessimistic outlook of reality
>>7418002
Except for in those cases where it isn't.
>>7417738
It's pretty bad right now desu. Just stick around for a week or so and you'll see some good discussion actually pop up every so often.
Are there unironically people who make a point not to read fiction
