Truly funny book, friend: funnier than the funniest parts of Gravity's Rainbow.
>>
American Psycho
I was in tears multiple times while reading it, it's so bizarre and the way it's written just makes it better.

I've thought about picking it up but I was reluctant by the criticism. What should I expect from it, negatively?

JR is even better.
>>
>>7416010
Its pretty much 380 pages of hysterical satirical dinner conversations and 19 pages of some of the most horrifying violence in an english novel.
>>
>>7416010
The whole idea is how he monotonously describes both mundane high-society shit and gruesome murder in the exact same way. Most of the criticism comes from the brutal violence, but I feel that that's necessary because he describes everything with the exact same tone he describes his wardrobe and dinner reservations. Drives home the idea of consumerism turning people into psychos.
>>
>>7416010

Everyone is introduced with paragraph-long descriptions of what they are wearing throughout the entire book, there are several chapters which consist solely of mind-numbing music reviews, and the grotesque details of the violence are bar none the hardest and most disgusting things I've ever read.

That's all either part of the charm if you're reading it right though

I know it's a pleb answer, but you can't deny the hilarity of some scenes in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
>>
>>7416075
Heard it wasn't as good as the movie because it wasn't as psychological.
>>
>>7416080
Movie's complete shit compared to the book. It butchers the story. Replaces murdered black with asian, and does a horrible job of incorporating the tapeworm.

Is it poignant in any way? Cause I thought the movie was in a weird way.
>>
>>7416097
Yeah, but even more. I was laughing the whole way through then i cried in the end. It goes from Dark Comedy to depraved tragedy in the end. the Book ending is way more depraved than the movie, too. The Movie was way more PC than the book. SJWs wouldn't let it be made if it was written with the same subject matter and language as the book.
>>
>>7416078
I don't think I laughed once reading this book. There's no craft to the "comedy", its just random nonsense, which isnt funny
>>
>>7416113
42 isn't funny?
>>
>>7416113
It came out just in the beginning of the political correctness craze, and is a satirical look at how Scotsman transition, as well as a satire on modern stupidity. Welsh is funny because he's an asshole and doesn't give a shit whom he offends.

The Scottish dialect her writes in is tricky at first, but is pretty simple once you get used to it.
>>
Well, that's easy. Plenty of books are a barrell of laughs, but there's only one book whose fun never ends.

On page 40 of The Crying of Lot 49 and it's pretty funny. First Pynchon and didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I am.

Although it can be a little frustrating at times, it's definitely worth reading if you haven't already.

It might be better appreciated if you've read some of his other stuff, like Slaughterhouse-Five which shares some themes. But it might be his most comical and over-the-top novel.
