Do you feel that you are a more mindful reader now than a couple years back? Especially those of you who are already a few years into adulthood.

I do wonder how much of it would be, well, bias.

I definitely have learned how to read better. in my late teens and early 20s I tended to consume everything within a novel without discrimination, didn't have a filter for what was important vs what was not important to understanding the text.

Yes, and in two years time I'll see myself now as a bad reader. In four years time I'll see myself as a bad reader two years previous, and so on.

It's the same with everything. I have nothing but hate for any version of myself which is not my current, present version.

There is a current meme/joke/presupposition circulating in 4chan that Irish guys don't like 'too much ass', the flatter the better.
>>

No, it's worse. At some point your memory gets worse.

I've read too much at this point. A lot of it blends together. A lot of it I could only speak about if you reminded me of it somehow. And I would have to reread some.

Younger me would not need to reread anything. He memorized everything.

I'm still reading. It's less enjoyable now. I see less the story and more the themes, what the author is expressing by writing a scene or arc, and often the underlying expression disgusts me. Because it's childish or doesn't really make sense logically, and is clearly an emotional confusion for them being expressed in their writing.

It can make the character, or their actions ring hollow, or completely shatter. Of course most of this is male power fantasy. If you read too much of this, you understand how false and empty it is. It's not fun or enjoyable anymore.

As time goes on you read more and realize it's not just male, but human power fantasy, including women. And all of it is hollow. The fantasy of the individual.

I could go on for hours, I'm sure. It doesn't matter.

Point is the magic of reading vanishes as you get older and read more. To the point where I spend more time imagining a better writing then "experiencing" what people have actually written.

That's nothing to do with books, that's Grade A depression. Get help you retard, stop trying to make your mental illness part of your edgy identity.

Definitely. I didn't get into reading until I was 15. When I was 14 i had to read for school so I picked out whatever I needed to pass. One day my friend told me how the twilight series got her reading level up a ton (yes I know, but this was during the hype of it all and I was impressionable) so I decided fuck it I need my reading level up a lot plus the points it'll come with. After that I started reading those stupid coming of age books to satisfy my teen angst. Fast forward 3 years later I'm 18 and I only read if it's literature. I've definitely grown and I'm glad I'm a reader.

For sure, I pick up way more now than ever before.

A good example would be my reading of Kafka, the first time I read the Trial a few years ago just after getting into reading I hated it, however in my most recent reading I was absolutely blown away by it, what with the layered meaning of just about fucking everything. Kafka could do a whole lot with very fucking little.

overindulging in any hobby proves to you more than any literature ever can that life is boring and pointless
in the end no matter how much you hide from it that realization comes too late as your obsessive behaviour has led you to become increasingly isolated and has rendered you a non-functioning human being

If by mindful you mean more knowledgeable about what the author is trying to do, then yes. And I haven't had humanities classes since the age of 16. I've only read one lit crit book as well.

Although I find stuff like this interesting, kind of, and I do feel bad if I go through a book and don't realise that the main character was Jesus metaphor all along or whatever, but I do not suddenly find borin books entertaining due to this.

For example I may read a crime novel (Perfidia by jamss ellroy) and notice that he uses short sentences during certain action sequences. There was this brutal one where the cops attack and arrest a guy who's being framed and the way it was written was meant to portray the fact that he cops had no moral hesitations in fucking him up. I notice that authors switch from maybe really describing stuff in detail to rushing through it to portray things in a certain light.

Also I'm reading the secret history now and I can see the tropes in it, probably intentional.

Also I find many scifi novels having really interesting concepts but boring prose. I still can't really explain why.

Can I decipher pomo 2deep4everyone stuff? No. Do I know why novels are so often filled with vacuous sounding quotes that go for wisdom ("You can tell everything about a book by the length of its publishers name")? No. I can't even tell whether this is the author's view, or if it's the character's view, or if it's a parody.
