Nice, what part are you up to? This is my second time reading.
>>
Outer Dark and Ginger Ale
I'd post a picture but I have no working camera in my home
>>
>>7388098
about 10 pages away from finishing Beyond the Zero, it is my first time reading.

It is difficult, but also enjoyable. Maybe I should have got the companion thing.
>>
>>7388119
Just finished Suttree not long ago and loved it. How is outer dark?
>>
>>7388126
It's pretty solid so far, more abstract than a lot of McCarthy's other stuff
>>
Stoner and Nastro Azzurro

The tone of this is amazing so far, I'm loving it.
>>
>>7388125
I wouldn't recommend it. Plow through it and try to read as much in one sitting as you can. Things will start to come together.
>>
>>7388261
I've only been reading about 20-30 pages a day, finishing whatever "chapter" I'm on. I guess I kinda get that advice since it jumps around so much and the details would be fresh in my head.

For example, I pretty much completely forgot Eventyr was a medium when I got to this part with him and Dodson's flashback.

And I'm trying to get a handle on the prose, but it is difficult to follow and I do end up rereading parts a lot. Hopefully the more I read the easier it becomes. I didn't have this problem with Lot 49

Kraken black spiced rum & Kraken by China Mieville.

I wrote down character names and a brief summary of who they are to refer back to. After the first chapter it starts to kick into gear though. You will definitely enjoy it thoroughly if you've enjoyed it so far.
>>
>>7388296
You're up to the most powerful section of the novel. Enjoy!
>>
>>7388314
Yeah, I have enjoyed it so far definitely. I almost did that with the characters, but I figured I should just experience it the first time I read it.

My nigga. Opioids and Russian lit.

I ran out of dope, so I bombed 250mg of tianeptine to hold me over. Might top it off with some kratom. I'm running on fumes here. I just started Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment.

Water and Mythology by Edith Hamilton. I'm getting into the Greeks late, but on the bright side I'm finally starting to understand why they're held up so highly. The setting comes out to make Ancient Greece like a utopia, despite the terrible outcomes of most things involving the Gods.

Would you guys recommend reading some of the original sources here? I like the Ovid stories a lot, how is Metamorphoses?

>>
>>7392593
what do you think of it so far?
>>
Going to get a bottle of Canadian Club and read Houellebecq and drink in bed to be honest.
>>
>>7392686
Passionate and high-end prose as far as I read. Each character is sharply chiseled, both vigorous and “masculine” yet somehow desesperately seeking an escape and utterly crushed, it led me to feel a great empathy for the protagonist. François Mauriac sure knows how to depict a young man in his more troubled years. Honestly, I can't understand why he's so much underrated and ignored here albeit we praise and keep talking about talentless authors the like of Albert Camus.
>>
>>7392593
Hey everyone get a load of this rich fuck.
>>
>>7392729
I bought the bottle for $28,15 and got the book for $3,19. I wouldn't describe myself as “rich”.

I read in French, I can't help you but I doubt there would be a lot of editions for this novel, it's not one of his most popular ones. I don't know much about it.

I might trade a couple of titles if you demonstrate advanced skills. “Voyage au bout de la nuit”, “Inventaire de l'abîme” or “Lieu d'asile”. I bought a lot by Georges Duhamel recently. Joke apart, what are you, a “NEET”? You should search a position to apply, it's much more rewarding and interesting to work, buy titles and build a library.

How does this work well unless you're an actual alcoholic who needs booze to function?
>>
>>7394009

Protip: You don't have to get wasted when you drink alcohol. A single drink can be felt. Relaxes you. Can help with immersion in fiction and enjoyment of prose.

Subtlety is out of style, but you still don't have to get obliterated every time you drink.
>>
>>7393802

It's quite surely the best thing in the entire universe. For a short while.

Water and GR as well. Only about 30 pages in and still waiting to be blown away and become engrossed in the text. How long must I wait, /lit/?
>>
>>7394057

Keep waiting my friend, keep waiting...
>>
>>7394034
I was an accomplished binge drinker in college, so I'm not a lightweight, but one or two drinks just had the opposite effect on me from what you described. It gets distinctly harder to concentrate and appreciate prose.
>>
>>7394057

I'm almost halfway through, and have to say that with this novel, for every one chapter that is very entertaining and gives a clear understanding of where the plot is going, there are two that are virtually incomprehensible and confuse the fuck out of you. These latter passages tend to bore me.
>>
I made it to the epilogue of War and Peace last night and cracked a beer, by the time I got to Part 2 I couldn't follow any of it. Am I a retard?
>>
>>7394057
I was already engrossed at that point but definitely by the second section it should grab you
>>
>>7394009
OP here. Don't knock it if you've never tried it. Having a few beers is not the same as going through a fifth of whiskey.
Both are quite enjoyable but I probably won't read when doing the latter as I won't remeber what I read.

which euro lager does pbr compare to and why do american fetishise it so much?
>>
>>7394847
There's no euro beer that's as bad. PBR is fetishized because it tastes the most like beer out of all the cheap beers that are less than $1 a can. It took on an ironic hipster status in part through its outdated labeling and their pride in their 1893 award. But practically, it's nice to have a really cheap beer that you can take to a party and people won't be ashamed. It got me through many grad school evenings quite happily. But it's not much better than soda with alcohol and a whiff of hops. Stick to good, cheap German lagers and you'll be much more pleased.

The only American lager I've had is Budweiser. Tastes worse than €0.90 a litre eurolager tbqh.
>>
>>7394845
Literally a meme author
>>
>>7394902
Budweiser is nasty industrial piss. No European brewery that I've encountered has sunk that low. Even in Turkey the Efes Pilsen tastes better. In America, some find and drink products are made to incredibly low standards. It's just how things are. Fortunately, good craft breweries are doing really well and their beers are mostly quite affordable. Left Hand and Captain Lawrence and Founders are my favorites at the moment.
>>
>>7394910
Just because his novels are now entering meme status here doesn't mean he's a meme author as much as pynchon is a meme author
>>
>>7394939
Your craft beer movement is based since it influenced Europeans to be more diverse in their offerings as well, so we have our traditional stuff and American inspired microbreweries as well.

Leads to some interesting developments, like Belgian style brewers trying their hand at heavy stouts and the like.
