All fiction is just time wasting, OP. Indeed, even most non-fiction is technically a waste unless it directly relates to teaching you how to do something you plan on doing in the real world.
But that doesn't matter, because nothing matters and all that is left is the satisfaction of desires. Which fiction does quite well.

Why do you have to divide literature into 'genre' and 'literary' fiction? I do agree most of literature is bad, like all other art mediums' products, but assuming something is of good quality because it has a 'deeper message' is naïve. Of course, Ulysses is better than Dune, for example (both as a novel, a book, and a work of fiction), but it isn't because the second one lacks an 'underlying message', or because the first one doesn't follow genre conventions (although it does add to its quality): it's because it has better character development, smart and well written dialogue, innovative prose, creative and relevant metaphors and symbolism, and still managing to be philosophical and entertaining.
