Casino just gifted me a free Kindle.

Any tips or things I should know about it? I only just set it up a few moments ago but it seems pretty nifty. I was pleasantly surprised by how it looks.
>>
You can just turn it offline forever and load books through USB from a computer. Uses .mobi format. Epub is equivalent but unless you crack it and install a different UI you'll need to convert to mobi first.
>>

was actually just about to research how i could do this. super useful thanks so much.

um... it's an e-reader, it does e-reader things, what exactly are you expecting people to tell you here?
>>
>>7376115
well ive never owned one or known people that have owned one and i wasnt sure if there are common issues people run into or like this poster said >>7376105 ways to work around putting free books on it not through amazon.

i wasnt expecting a long thread, just a little feedback from my bros here at lit. i value your guys opinions first desu

I use the 'send to kindle' program to send books pirated books on my computer to my kindle via wifi, don't even need to attach it to the computer.

I also use the send to kindle extension for my browser. When you want to read a long article or something online you just have it sent to your kindle in ebook format.

I use Calibri to convert ebooks to mobi on my pc.

also very helpful. thanks young whippersnapper.
>>
>>7376148
oh yeah btw "azw3" and "mobi" are as far as you're concerned the same file format. (unless you got a really old ass kindle)
>>
This. Also, popular torrent sites like TPB and kickass torrents have large packs of popular and or classic books to get you started.

Also, for all your legal free classics, OP:

if you do have an old ass kindle with new firmware like a touch, mobi can really get fucked up. Mine bricked on mobis that werent formatted correctly
>>
>>7376164
Why is Calibre so based, lads?
>>
>>7376170
i just looked at the packaging and stuff and didnt see anything other than a copyright date of 2014 to indicate how new it is.

i can tell you it looks like the one in the OP though. doesnt have the hard keyboard, its all touch
>>
>>7376179
Yours is paperwhite dont worry
>>
>>7376171
It still doesnt support bulk upload well. I have 30 gigs of books id like to put on mine but it slows to a terrible crawl if you try to do it

thats like 10,000 books

oh ok. very cool.
>>
>>7376159
Careful with this one if you are looking for something that is a translation. All of the translations that are free tend to be shit-tier translations.
>>
>>7376164
dude, that Svetlana Alexievich you got there, the Chernobyl one, is it epub/mobi? Is it the complete version? Mind sharing here with me? you can use pomf.io to upload annonymously.

Thanks!
>>
Maybe you should update it because it adds a few features.

However if you do its going to have ads which means you have to swipe every time you turn it on to get rid of them.
>>
>>7376260
That's wrong. They're OLD translations. Not always the best, but sometimes better than those new ones whipped up by editors just so they can make people believe it's still worth paying them for a book that's centuries into the public domain.
>>
>>7376418
was about to chastise you about having to ask for something that must be just about everywhere by now, but... yeah, apparently it's not?

Nice thread, lads.
>>
>>7376450
thanks mate. I did look in a lot of places, couldn't find it.
>>
is a kindle worth it? I'm starting to buy books again and it's great but pirating all the books I'd ever want is also attractive. has it changed your reading habits any?
>>
>>7376518
E-readers are great. Made me read more and it's more comfortable to read since it's a light device you can hold with one hand. Much less cumbersome. Great for reading in bed as well. Or in a bath, just put it in a ziploc.
>>
>>7376518
I got a paper book after reading for about two years exclusively on a reader and hate it. I got so used to being able to take what I'm reading everywhere with me, marking passages without ruining the book, having dozens of bookmarks neatly sorted, not worrying about getting it dirty or damaged or reading under any light conditions pretty much anywhere I want that reading a paper book is a chore now.
>>
I need your advice /lit/ bros. I'm thinking of getting an e-reader so I can read articles and papers and I have a few questions: Do all kindles run PDF? What's a pretty good e-reader? And is it really impossible to read with them in complete darkness? I've never had one in my hands so I don't know.
>>
>>7378619
>And is it really impossible to read with them in complete darkness?
That depends whether or not you buy one with a backlit screen. That feature is usually advertised.
>>
>>7378632
I've read the Kindle Paperwhite has backlight so it seems the most convincing so far. It also seems like most e-readers have problems running PDF files, is this correct?
>>
>>7378646
I have a backlit Kobo, but I never use it to read PDF files. I heard it can be a chore because PDF text doesn't scale, and zooming and scrolling is slow and cumbersome with the slow refresh rate of e-ink screens. I guess that's a problem you'll always have with PDF, unless you buy a tablet or a big e-reader.
>>
>>7378619
PDF usually look too small and are hard to read. Calibre converts them to mobi and makes them readable, although with some formatting issues but if youre not a faggot you wont mind. Theres also k2pdf that formats academic papers pretty nicely
>>
>>7378619
>>7378662
The pdf-to-mobi conversion isn't what I'd call "readable", no. It's a mess. The constant linebreaks, made worse by the double-column format that is so frequent in academic papers, makes speed-reading less efficient and makes you turn pages way too often.
k2pdf of Briss are better options for cropping PDFs into a kindle-friendly frame.
>>
>>7378662
>Calibre converts them to mobi and makes them readable

Not really true, the best I can do with pdf is use acrobat to crop out page numbers and headers, then remove hidden text, then I put it in mobipocket and remove images.
>>
>>7378619
PDF isn't optimal on e-readers no, but it can be serviceable.

Just use the landscape mode and 3 pages on kindle will cover 1 page form the PDF file. Not perfect but very doable. Though don't expect any freedom like zooming and jumping pages.

If you want that freedom get and iPad or something similar in case you don't care about battery consumption as the ereader's main draw is the long battery life.
>>
>>7378662
Can recommend k2pdf, turns multi-column PDFs into single-column easily and reliably in my experience. From there converting to epub/mobi/whatever works fine.
