My mom said to pare my wishlist down to a few I /really/ wanted.

So I got it down to this. She may just get me a giftcard instead too. Last time she brought my list to the B&N store and the cashier was stumped, apparently incredulously/disgustedly asked "who are these /for/?" Because pic related are "philosophy books".

I totally disagree with >>7373535 and think it's a great book. If you have any reclusive tendencies or weird and esoteric literary or artistic interests, you'll be able to relate to it.

It's exhausting to read, and I cannot imagine that you will understand even close to all of the references (from art to Latin authors to exotic plants), but that's kind of the point. The Penguin edition has an introduction which does a good job of contextualizing the novel's publication, in case you're unfamiliar with its role in literature as a whole.

I hope you enjoy it!

I get the "real job" shtick too. It's weird because I make more than twice as much as they ever did. But I grew up poor and rural--it's not a real job if it's not manual labor or retail/service, you know.

My mom gets a bit defensive and likes to talk about how "she'd read more if she ever had the time" when I bring them up. My dad asks where's my "Cat Who" books, which is the only thing he can remember I've read (when I was a preteen).

I dunno what they think, I guess. They don't seem to care too much and it makes for easy gifts.

Undergrad here senpai and I get this shit a lot. My mom worked retail most of her life even though she graduated and got her degree. (Something about not even taking teaching opportunities offered, idk just seems like general lack of drive and care to better herself and our lot in life).

Similarly my grandpa was a pipe fitter or something and had a construction company until something went awry and it was bought up by a larger corporation.

Needless to say I get shit from him all the time as to why I'm not doing anything to make money yet but by the time you take out various taxes, the impact it'd have on my mother's benefits, as well as the impact it would have on my student aid. As a result of this it'd be pointless to waste my time in the summers doing some menial job when I could either be focusing on research interests or just expanding my knowledge via various forums and self-pursuits.
>>
>>7376303
Yeah, my grandpa was similarly a lumberjack, but he never cared too much about my prospects.

You really ought to be searching out internships though, assuming you're not a freshman. If you're in literature, they may be unpaid or just give you lunch/travel expense regardless, so they wouldn't affect benefits. But experience in your field is more important than independent research (assuming you don't get anything published) at the undergrad stage.
>>
>>7376311
Considering on working towards getting published or at least doing research and other pursuits with some of the professors I'm at least somewhat close to family.

That way I might have more prospects and a better shot at getting on the PhD path. I'm not a lit student for my major I just find it has a lot of conversation about topics relevant to my interests and the culture here is a lot more refined.

>shouldn't you be able to win all arguments with your pleb parents

You shouldn't really be arguing about it with them in the first place. If you're the smarter one here then you need to be the more diplomatic one. They might have a point about the job if you don't have one which you would have to concede, but if they are shitting on you for reading and wanting books in general then it's usually out of intellectual insecurity.

Especially if your Father is crapping on you for it. The thought of a son having a depth of thought already in his youth that he himself doesn't even possess in his older age isn't going to sit too well with some men. That doesn't mean he's a bad person necessarily for subconsciously competing with his own son, male pride is just a weird thing.

Modern science is the equivalent to religion to the average person. They believe in it, parade it around as the ultimate truth, attack people who don't believe in it, but they can't prove or explain it. I mean, the difference being that science generally has to be proved by some one, but the people using it to lord over theists, aren't usually the ones able to prove anything.

Dylan Moran has a good bit on it.
