It's about looking for the point of things in an absurd world. The point is that the play is no more absurd than reality. Nothing makes sense unless you're crazy. So you look for the one key to make sense of it all, Godot. Godot is the communist revolution, existential meaning, God, yet Godot is none of those things, just what those things represent.

got into an argument with some friends about it recently, over this question: If the two main characters were presented with a legitimate form of suicide that would successfully kill them (gun with bullets that will fire, rope on a tree that will not break, etc), would they actually go through with it and kill themselves? I argue yes, others argued no, some others said you're missing the point that suicide is never a proper option.

I take the play to be a tongue-in-cheek portrayal of the meaning of life. The characters are bored and fuck around waiting for something "meaningful" to happen (that will never happen), and so they create entertainment for themselves out of their general pettiness and idiocy, and it ends up being meaningful itself.

Absolutely Spengler is worth reading. I think that Westerners will get more of of him than many others will, but you don't read the Decline in order to pick up on dogmatist positions, but to discover the real 'Faustian soul' beneath the bedrock of Western history.

Also, if they wanted to kill themselves they could have jumped in the bog mentioned in the first act after the "failed attempt".
If I recall correctly both the mention to the swamp and the hanging on trees happened in the same act, if didn't, ignore what I said earlier.
In any case what matters is that no action was fully perfomed, Godot would be remembered and his (name) presence would be enough (as it was in the whole play) to avoid any meaningful action.
