Just got this for $5. Just starting to learn about philosophy. Did I do good /lit/?

Why did you choose barnes and noble edition? Seems pretty expensive and it allegedly has a bad translation.
where you went wrong was paying for a book that's 5000 years old. You're gonna look like a real dingus with the most entry level phil book possible on your bookshelf.

Plato's Republic should be the last thing you read by him, but if you just want to read it for it's own sake or to have a general understanding of his philosophy then go ahead.

>the most entry level phil book

And yea... just trust.
College can be one hell of a ride. As long as you keep an open mind. When another classmate asks if you wanna do something or try some substance, default best answer is always Yes.

Jowett's not the best, but his translations are no where near as horrible as those of other translators (the Republic translation by Cornford for example makes a point of calling out Jowett in its introduction, and then proceeds to shit out one of the most dire translations available).
Unlike the autists who insist that Plato absolutely must be read in a certain order (always from early and short and ultimately culminating in the Republic, ignoring that the Laws is Plato's longest and latest work), I think starting with the Republic is just fine. Readings of the other dialogues are necessary for deep study of Plato, but not for a complete beginner, nor does the reading of those other dialogues actually substantially contribute to the reading of the Republic for most readers of Plato who aren't doing deep study.
