There's a few reasons for MtFs to use this hairstyle. The hairstyle can cover up the following:
-Brow bossing/male shaped forehead. Women tend to have more smooth, rounded foreheads, while a more male forehead will have what appears to be a bump above the eyes, with the forehead slanting backwards.
-Male pattern baldness. As has been the focus of this thread, this could be a reason as well.
-Male hairline. Even without any male pattern baldness, males still have a hairline that is slightly higher than in females.
All of these issues can be fixed with a surgery called FFS, but now many people can afford it. The pic I added to this post is an example of this. The pic also helps visualize the stuff I described above.

Hairystyles can impact how your face looks, wearing your hair a certain way can make your head appear smaller, can make you look cuter, can frame your face well, can cover up your huge forehead etc.
