It's really something you have to experience. In terms of dysphoria it can be really disorienting in that you see in yourself the things that you make yourself see. So if you look in the mirror or something and get dysphoric you get stuck in a loop of thought that, while being actually really easy to get out of by just thinking happy positive thoughts, seems like it is entirely inescapable.
For avoiding bad trips though, if you think everything is going wrong it is usually pretty easy to come out of it by taking a deep breath and just thinking "everything is all right". At least that is my personal experience with it.
