Improved funding and increased efficacy for basic functions of government, for one. The department of Education, the EPA, and FDA are all underfunded.
Improving infrastructure beyond building a wall on a border that we already have net negative/neutral immigration would increase employment more meaningfully.
So, this issue is infuriating because there is no side to take. This was something that could not be stopped by current political discussion.
The Liberals are saying that stricter gun control would have prevented this. They're wrong. The guy who did this was a natural-born citizen who worked as a security guard and got his guns totally legally. His record was spotless and he used a semi-automatic AR-15, not an assault rifle as some reports stated. Everything he did was totally legal and well within the bounds of the law, no history of mental conditions or felonies that I'm aware of (haven't heard anything on it) and he seemed every part a responsible gun owner. Short of a nationwide firearm ban, there was no way they could have legally prevented him from acquiring firearms.
The Conservatives are also wrong because they're suggesting we tighten border control. This guy was born in the United States. He was a full-fledged citizen. Tighter border control wouldn't have helped anything at all. He was a domestic terrorist who acted safely within the bounds of the law up until he walked into that nightclub while packing heat.

So, neither the Liberal ideas nor the Conservative ideas could have prevented a domestic terrorist. They're both wrong. Hell, the FBI apparently did two probes on him before and there was no reason whatsoever for him to be implicated in a terrorist plot. The only indication we had of this was his pastor-type mosque guy preaching that it's better for the gays if they find the sweet release of death instead of wallowing in their sin. We could argue that the pastor-type was practicing hate speech, but the very arguments Christians use to defend their right to refuse gays service could be used to justify the pastor-type's right to say that gays shouldn't be allowed to live. Like my coworker said, claiming hate speech in this case is a very slippery slope.
Short of creating internment camps for all Middle Eastern and Muslim citizens in the US,we have no course of action here. Obama's wrong. Hillary's wrong. Trump is wrong. Bernie is wrong, literally every single politician that has opened their mouth is wrong. Obama said it's the laxness of gun laws when that wasn't it. Trump said it's the ease of immigration when that wasn't it. Hillary said something about an assault rifle when it wasn't an assault rifle. Bernie said it's criminals and the mentally ill who shouldn't have them, but this guy wasn't a criminal (that I'm aware of), nor was he mentally ill (that I'm aware of). He was a Muslim practicing his religion, which was gunning down gays in a nightclub. That is the bared truth, and it's fucking horrible because either you stereotype or you figure that there's not enought radicalists within their ranks to cause a national uproar. The political bullshit of right now isn't going to fix this.

These things happen and they are horrible, but how does one stop such acts? By educating themself and voting based on that. Lobbying and activism are other actions you can take.
